I’d rather he played centrally - when he plays wide right doucoure has to continually come across to support whoever’s right back when we’re being attacked which lessens his impact and causes the other two in midfield to have to shuffle across to cover him. Makes it look like we’re perpetually outnumbered in midfield.

....I think he played centrally against Newcastle but was too deep and often found himself in wide positions anyway.

I love watching him play, he’s capable of doing things other players can’t do but the balance of the side has to be right to facilitate him.

I feel sorry for him, we concede possession, that in itself nullifies any threat he may have, added to that, the scant few times he receives the ball, barely anyone moves and you're basically tactically taking your best player out of the game. I don't know how any of this is James fault.

We knew he wasn't going to roll his sleeves up, he was bought for the quality he can produce but he is an assister, he can't assist mannequins.

Was lucky enough to miss the Newcastle game - agree about balance - a remodelling of the right hand side in the summer would work wonders - if I was given carte blanche then Aarons and Bailey but I don’t think our bank manager will quite be able to stretch to them unfortunately.

Interesting article in yesterday’s Times on Siggurdson and James. Was pointed out that we don’t win if they both play from the off
Is this right?

We just don't have the players to get the best out of him, we don't have enough of the ball. Wasted here at the minute.

I don't think that we need to dominate the ball. He's not an Iniesta that will ball dominate while patiently waiting for a chink to slice a through ball into. We just need to be able to create spaces for him to operate in, and spaces for him to find.

He does work on the counterattack. We're struggling to move the ball and move off the ball while in possession to create those spaces when the opposition sits back.

IMO, having an actual attacking threat up the right side would do a lot to spread the defense and create those spaces. He's isolated over there (though he drifts in a lot with license to do so) and otherwise the defense can cheat left because that's where the danger is.

He still needs the ball to do his thing mate, conceding possession and defending deep just makes it pointless playing James; especially like I say when he does get the ball, nothing is on.

Bunch of bitter slimey gremlins supporterting a mid table club spitting poison at James bloody Rodriguez. Who astonishingly plays for thier club.

Get the boil out lads. You've been inflicted with everton why not take it out on a footballing god.

Destroy what is beautiful. Darkness consumes.

Everton defeated Wolves with James and Gylfi starting together - James playing as a false 9.

This even happened:

The key there is Iwobi brought some pace and balance and James played further up field that game.

As much as there is focus that James and Gylfi shouldn't play together (and despite the Wolves win, I'd generally agree with that sentiment) , I think a huge aspect not captured from yesterday was the absence of any threat from dead balls with neither DCL, Yerri or Keane on the field.

IMHO, when you have James on the field you should have the big CBs in - his assist rate on corners and deep free kicks is very high and tactically, it's a huge waste having him (or Gylfi for that matter) taking corners short because there is no threat in the box.

If you look at results this year, Everton has really benefited from the dead ball and yesterday was a self inflicted wound in that regard.

It's the intensity that James can not handle, he just not up to it physically or mentally...

Everton also struggle with this high energy high pressing football, we need younger fitter players with more energy as we are just getting overrun & outplayed...

He and Siggy should never be on the pitch at the same time. I gave Carlo the benefit of a doubt before the game, but surprise surprise I was right and it backfired horribly. James shouldn’t be excused for the performance l, but the blame mainly lies on Carlo for being arrogant with his lineup.
