Everton defeated Wolves with James and Gylfi starting together - James playing as a false 9.
This even happened:
The key there is Iwobi brought some pace and balance and James played further up field that game.
As much as there is focus that James and Gylfi shouldn't play together (and despite the Wolves win, I'd generally agree with that sentiment) , I think a huge aspect not captured from yesterday was the absence of any threat from dead balls with neither DCL, Yerri or Keane on the field.
IMHO, when you have James on the field you should have the big CBs in - his assist rate on corners and deep free kicks is very high and tactically, it's a huge waste having him (or Gylfi for that matter) taking corners short because there is no threat in the box.
If you look at results this year, Everton has really benefited from the dead ball and yesterday was a self inflicted wound in that regard.
But if you go back and look at the game thread you'll see that Wolves had the better of the play and we all thought it was a smash and grab to get out of there with the three points.
Hmm. This begins to explain the irrational and unacknowledged, deeply shameful, attraction that I have been feeling recently towards the Everton number 19.has the physicality of a fragile teenage girl
Just said in the match day thread, sounds like Carlo just told James to man up if he thinks he can play in the premier league...
I 100% trust in Carlo to man manage correctly so I’m interested to see if James starts/how he performs off the back of that! ...sounded like a ‘go out there and prove them wrong’ kind of comment.
Well we’ve won more games without him than with him, when he’s good he is very good, when he plays like he did against Fulham he’s an handicap, and that’s not the first time. Seeing him going off v Fulham was embarrassing, he looked like a man we usually called a “ Quilt”....I think he played centrally against Newcastle but was too deep and often found himself in wide positions anyway.
I love watching him play, he’s capable of doing things other players can’t do but the balance of the side has to be right to facilitate him.
His legs have gone, you can have great skill but if your legs are not working it's difficult to compete in the premiership...Well we’ve won more games without him than with him, when he’s good he is very good, when he plays like he did against Fulham he’s an handicap, and that’s not the first time.
