Having watched both. rodriguez and beardsley are/were a level above the rest of their team mates. Both in feet and head. Same problem years apart. To many average players not on their level.
But got them for very different reasons. Beardsley because of the stupidness of souness. Rodriguez because of his injury record.
But this club would still benefit a lot from 20/25 games of rodriguez with better players around him. Spurs at home last month was painful. He was a level above every blue shirt around him. It did bring back memories of beardsley at Everton playing alongside stuart barlow and peter beagrie.
Spurs at home, but what about Sheffield Utd and Fulham at home? Where was the guile against those two football powerhouses?

Honestly I don’t remember the Fulham game that well but against Sheffield United he put one on a plate for Richy and Dom and I still don’t understand how at least the rebound didn’t go in. This was still in the first half and if they’d have put that away you’d have backed us to win. Even when not having his best match, the lad makes things happen.

His national side actually manage the team, well I never!

"not at the optimum level of competition"

We all know what the Columbians meant when they said that: he's not focussed and doing unprofessional things...like waltzing out on his club before the season ended. Good for them.

I remember that and have the same recollections of Beardslley, he was a miles better player than anyone else we had at the time and can see the similarities with James, it would be great to see one foolish season of James with a couple of extra better players with him

Great when fit, but missed a lot.
Never the same after St Virgil ‘put one on him’.
To be honest, I like him as a player, but he came in as one of our main players and went missing for so long. On balance was he a benefit?
May be marginally, I can’t decide.

I think we need other creative players and treat Rodriguez as the icing on the cake.

He just missed too much.

Personally think people are being harsh on him. He was utterly brilliant until he got injured and was out for a while. No coincidence our season fizzled out when him allan and doucoure all got crocked.
Got to agree his football brain is amazing, thought that about Gomes tho,the problem is in the Premier league everything is about speed pace fitness .shame both are suffering from previous injuries and prove to be their downfall.

Agree to an extent but James has never had pace. There were doubts he would be able to cope with the speed of the game here but for me he has. He has so much quality on the ball he's got that innate quality of being able to make the game look slower around him. His fitness is a problem, but tbh it has been for a long while.
