2020/21 James Rodriguez

And we'll have players with pace and nobody with the ability to find them.

Constantly taking step backs mate.

You can't moan about us being average and advocate us actively wanting rid of the one top level player we have.
See your point, but he is a lot of wages for very few games.

James wont stay now Benitez is here mate.

It was 50/50 as soon as his dad left to Real why would he want to play under a manager he doesn't like when he could go to a CL club?

The amount of interest in him should he become available is normally the biggest indicator of a player’s quality, or at the very least, their utility, imo.

There isn’t going to be great demand for Rodriguez’ signature. The amount of clubs that will be interested in him will be small.

There's about five that have been reported.

Mendes joins the dots and gets players moves that HE wants to happen.

Everton weren't initially interested until Mendes came with a ready-made deal and the Carlo factor finished the job, for example.

James will be attractive for clubs that know they can bring him in and not be entirely reliant on him.

I don’t recall that tbh, the vast majority were gutted when he left. And he was a far more effective player than James btw.

There were plenty who were happy enough for him to go.

Maybe it was just acceptance as he'd turned down the deal a few months previous.

I'm not saying we should go above and beyond to keep James if he doesn't want to be here, btw.

My issue is that it seems he'll end up being the first out of the door and the actual tosh in our squad stays on.

And I'm sick of our better players leaving. And, I don't trust the people in charge to improve on them when they do go, because over the past 5 years none of them have managed - not Walsh, not Brands, not Moshiri and none of the managers.

Not being argumentative, but who are the five clubs that are supposed to be interested in taking him on?

If/when he goes, it will be for a small sum. Nobody’s paying big money for Rodriguez.

Milan, Napoli, Atleti (I personally think that's tenuous but they have been linked and the deal was all but done for him to go there in 2019 until Perez pulled the plug) - those are the teams that Mendes himself reportedly mentioned in an interview last week. Have also seen a link to PSG (again, I'd say tenuous) and Roma.

I think the one that will have legs will be Milan, because Mendes will have seen an opportunity there - Calhanoglu has just left on a free, they need a playmaker who they can get for 'cheap' and he'd suit the team/league. That's probably where the Marca report comes from, and it is exactly how Mendes operates.

Last year he focused on getting a lot of players to the Prem, some of whom he didn't even represent fully. He acted as a middle man. In James' case, he set the deal up with Madrid for him to leave, it was then a case of finding a club and the Ancelotti connection worked a treat. Like how Raiola teed up the Kean to PSG deal then just got Everton's sign off.

And let's not be revisionist. When he has been fit, James has been very good for us. Yes, he had some poor games, and yes he wasn't fit for enough games - but we knew that signing him, so not having another way of playing is on Ancelotti and also on the recruitment on being so poor previously and even last season when there were still blatant holes in the squad. He still gave us moments of magic not one of our other players is capable of coming close to. The levels of difference sometime was scary, tbh. But in true Everton fashion, it'll be the good one that leaves first.

Was this when he dropped him from the RM side ?
I don’t think it matters anyway ,as I’ve observed before I don’t think Everton ever really ‘touched’ him.
It was at RM. I agree that James wasn't here for the lure of Everton but he's under contract here and is probably our only truly creative player. If we can't effectively replace what he offers to the team (not like for like, obviously) then we should keep him and our new manager should be able to get a tune out of him. I suspect, however, that he will leave and we will not effectively replace him because Everton.

Our 2nd most creative & clinical player but not good enough simply due to his unreliability. I wouldn't hesitate to offload him but Bob Elstone is right, we should be looking to shift those players way ahead of James.
