2021/22 James Rodriguez

For one mate, please, stop saying 'Athletico' - it makes you seem stupid. It isn't a word.

If he does go to Atletico, surely the shouts that he's some lazy diva with an attitude would be proved wrong, unless Simeone - who wanted him a few years back - has got it absolutely wrong?

We will miss James Rodriguez because our current options are nowhere near his quality and neither are the players we want to bring in (or would be able to) to replace him.

It won't be the end of the world. It'd be a massive shame that we couldn't find the best way to use him for the last year of his deal. And the main issue is the reason we have to ship him out is because our DoF has failed in one of the main jobs he was tasked with back in 2018, which was to shift out huge earners who contribute nothing.
Re your first point, I guess we will just have to wait and see if he is successful there or not before making any assessments. He offers something different to what they have, but it also could be seen as a very good commercial deal for Atletico than a football one.

Yes it’s a shame he is going, but I’m not going to lose any sleep over it.

He deffo wouldn’t be happy to stay. He utterly hates the Premier League. Imo he would’ve left even if Ancelotti stayed, him leaving just rubber stamped it.

I really don't think he's that bothered. He hated the league so much he played more minutes last season for us than he has in 4/8 last eight seasons.

Ancelotti used him poorly last season - far too reliant on him. We knew he couldn't stay fit for 40 games when we signed him but we pretty much used him like a player who could. He still produced. Even on his bad games, and yes he did have them, he still produced the moment that could well have, and should have in a lot of cases, turned the game in our favour.

This is my issue tbh.

If we'd got in quality - say a Bailey type. If we'd got in a ball carrying midfielder with actual creativity in their locker. If we'd got in that right-back we've needed for three years.

Then maybe I wouldn't be so arsey about it.

But we've not got those things in, and I'm fed up of Evertonians moaning about being mediocre but then when good things do come along, they want them out because we can't get our heads around it, especially if one thing is conceived to have changed in their demeanour (see all the shouts for Richarlison to be sold because he had a bit of a poor year last season).

I'm sick of seeing good players come and go and then genuine tosh stick around - and it's a vicious cycle, because as the tosh sticks around, it means the good players have to go to balance the books.

Having now seen him up close for a season, I don't think he's actually that good - certainly not one world's best that we had all hoped he was.

For every incredible pass, there are 5 shockers. They're practically Ross Barkley numbers. His favourite pass is that crossfield switch to Lucas Digne, even if it makes absolutely no sense. He plays for himself (as he has always done) not for the team.

While he's obviously the most naturally talented player at the club, the level of indulgence he was given by Ancelotti last year was as nauseating as it was undeserved. No wonder he wants to leg it when the new manager stops the preferential treatment.

I await the legion of fanboys response.

Doubt he’d post that unless it was certain he’d agreed terms etc with Atlético. We need to be getting a decent fee for him so we can buy some quality, otherwise we’d be better off making use of him for a year.

I don't think Benitez has chased him out of the club. I think Benitez would use him if he stayed. I think James is happy to go but probably also happy to stay and play out the last year of his deal if no offer came in.

We - the club - want his wages off the books. That'd be fine by me if he contributed nothing, but he doesn't, he's our most creative player by far and as I proved with the numbers last week was more creative than all of our current options, plus our priority attacking target, pretty much combined last season.
I don't think he wants to be here. He had his agent touting him around as soon as Ancelotti left and I've asked several times (because i don't do things like Insta or Twitch), has he actually congratulated his team mates for winning the opening day fixture? has said anything about a packed Goodison or having fans back? He doesn't care! He'd stay I'm sure, up till now he's been earning a small fortune and been allowed to call his own shots so if he can't find a similar deal else why would he leave but he's not fighting for his Everton future and he's doesn't give a damn about the club. His recent statements about how he only came here for Carlo and how we aren't a great club basically say that.
Now you're absolutely right, he's our best player, by a country mile and when you have a player like that you do whatever you can to get him in the squad and all players are mercenaries these days so whilst I'd much rather have a player who totally embraces my club it's not vital but the big problem with James, and the reason why i imagine the club - and i think it's club, not just Benitez - is not fighting tooth and nail to keep him is because he's on silly money and you'll only get half a season at best from him (if he was more reliable he'd still be at Real or something) and in our position we can't afford to have a player earning 200k a week sat at home playing computer games. I hope he stays, i hope he does and we get to see him live but sadly i think the writing was on the wall the moment Carlo jumped ship.
whatever the situation i hope it's resolved soon because it's a bit of a soap opera now.

We will miss him terribly. One win against a shocking Southampton isn’t changing my mind on that.

…I don’t think we’ll miss him ‘terribly’. I wouldn’t argue with anybody who says he was a joy to watch and quotes some impressive statistics, but I always thought his was a short-term appointment. To truly progress, we need progressive signings dedicated to the cause who provide an effective contribution week in, week out.

I would say, though, that James being here positively raises the clubs profile & it might’ve been clever to exploit that rather than chase him. I don’t think his departure will hurt us ‘terribly’ from a points perspective but we might have missed a trick not having him available for another season.

Would love to see him stay but he don’t suit Benitez style of play. I would love to see a season where we have a squad who are willing to fight for the shirt not a load of primma donnas

I disagree. He makes the odd bad pass. But he has more good than bad. I'd love someone to put together all his passes from last season for you. The little flicks, passes around the corner, through balls and yes that delightful cross field pass to digne.
