I don't think he wants to be here. He had his agent touting him around as soon as Ancelotti left and I've asked several times (because i don't do things like Insta or Twitch), has he actually congratulated his team mates for winning the opening day fixture? has said anything about a packed Goodison or having fans back? He doesn't care! He'd stay I'm sure, up till now he's been earning a small fortune and been allowed to call his own shots so if he can't find a similar deal else why would he leave but he's not fighting for his Everton future and he's doesn't give a damn about the club. His recent statements about how he only came here for Carlo and how we aren't a great club basically say that.
Now you're absolutely right, he's our best player, by a country mile and when you have a player like that you do whatever you can to get him in the squad and all players are mercenaries these days so whilst I'd much rather have a player who totally embraces my club it's not vital but the big problem with James, and the reason why i imagine the club - and i think it's club, not just Benitez - is not fighting tooth and nail to keep him is because he's on silly money and you'll only get half a season at best from him (if he was more reliable he'd still be at Real or something) and in our position we can't afford to have a player earning 200k a week sat at home playing computer games. I hope he stays, i hope he does and we get to see him live but sadly i think the writing was on the wall the moment Carlo jumped ship.
whatever the situation i hope it's resolved soon because it's a bit of a soap opera now.

I don't think he cares either way mate - I think that's the issue here. Maybe that's wrong, it probably is. But also, it seems the club have been pretty much eager to move him on this summer too. Maybe he also thinks, hang on, I'm the one being punted out of the door here, and they're bringing in Andros Townsend?

He's only sat at home - supposedly - because he's isolating.

If he goes, we have to replace the 15 goals he directly, in terms of goals or assists, contributed to last season.

For reference, that's more than Townsend, Iwobi, Gray and McNeil combined.

Our most progressive player in terms of passing/ball carrying last year after Iwobi (and that says enough).

And the lad can't run.

So we've got to replace that. That can't be with long diagonals to Townsend and Gray looking for flick ons like we saw for 45 minutes on Saturday - it won't work.

…I don’t think we’ll miss him ‘terribly’. I wouldn’t argue with anybody who says he was a joy to watch and quotes some impressive statistics, but I always thought his was a short-term appointment. To truly progress, we need progressive signings dedicated to the cause who provide an effective contribution week in, week out.

I would say, though, that James being here positively raises the clubs profile & it might’ve been clever to exploit that rather than chase him. I don’t think his departure will hurt us ‘terribly’ from a points perspective but we might have missed a trick not having him available for another season.

Well we made him the face of our USA adventure this Summer then barely played him.

Club are ran by mice.

I will miss James, he was the one spark of true , how did he do that, ability in our team. He was a joy to see in blue, it’s just a pity he didn’t get to play in front of the Goodison crowd. Things are so different at the club now than they were this time last season. Who knows whether that will be a good thing or a bad thing, all I know is I was much more positive about the blues 12 months ago.

I may well be wrong, I often am. Perhaps we are at the start of a great new era. Somehow though, I doubt it.

I think the byword now is stability. Less ambition maybe and living within our means until we get the new stadium built.

Sad to see James go but Benitez will have his own ideas. Hopefully he can prove us all wrong and bring success but not sure that’s his remit.

This is my issue tbh.

If we'd got in quality - say a Bailey type. If we'd got in a ball carrying midfielder with actual creativity in their locker. If we'd got in that right-back we've needed for three years.

Then maybe I wouldn't be so arsey about it.

But we've not got those things in, and I'm fed up of Evertonians moaning about being mediocre but then when good things do come along, they want them out because we can't get our heads around it, especially if one thing is conceived to have changed in their demeanour (see all the shouts for Richarlison to be sold because he had a bit of a poor year last season).

I'm sick of seeing good players come and go and then genuine tosh stick around - and it's a vicious cycle, because as the tosh sticks around, it means the good players have to go to balance the books.
Well we will see after the window of these things have been addressed or not.

Like you say mate, he doesn't care. We are pit stop on his farewell tour to retirement (or the MLS) and if he stays he'll play when it suits and now doubt be great and he'll be injured or fatigued when it doesn't - more than likely around a jam packed festive season but regardless of whether he's here or not the club need to be looking to add more goal and assists. Massive season for Doucoure i think, i understand the logic with Townsend and Gray and we saw that in the first game with 17 crosses which Dom and Richie could thrive off of but we seriously lack goals from the rest of the squad and that can't fall on James.

Well we've missed out on our first-choice RB target because we couldn't cobble together £12.5m. We tracked Bailey for years but couldn't afford him.

I'm fed up of giving the club the benefit of the doubt. We're hopeless.

Not that we couldn't afford them mate more our FFP issues.

James out bringing in say £6-8 million and 140k a week off the books probably seals one/two of our CM/RW/RB targets.

Thats just the way it is this window- next summer will be better.
