I am astonished that he has chosen to stay here.
He only signed in the first place because of CA who has long since left.

He does not have a long term contract and will be gone I twelve months anyway, possibly even as early as January.

He now has a manager that clearly wants something from his players that he feels James cannot give.

It is hard to imagine that he is so toxic that no other club wanted him or that Ja.es is so greedy that he has chosen to remain with us rather than earn less money but play more football.

He will try to do that; but if he falls short and gets us mid-table in these circumstances he'll be fine.

I happen to think with good team spirit and maybe adding a loan deal or two in January we can do a bit more than bare mid-table.

I think you overestimate the amount of loyalty people will hand to a player who has insulted the club and underlined how lacking in commitment he is to it. Yes there will be a hrad core of people who'll have the knives out for Benitez and use the James issue as a stick to beat him with, but it's not as if he's a club legend. He's a player who doesn't want to be here and the vast majority recognize that and will understand a manager that doesn't start him in games.

The problem with your choice of words is that in the minds of many blues when it comes to James and Benitez, it isn't James who has insulted us.

Terrible and sad this how much expectation has fallen away, we were points off champions league that any normal home record would have us playing with champion league finest this season.
I suppose a sad reflection on management recruitment, that some of us are allowing the expectations to be lowered so much.

It's not one or the other - it's both, and they now need to squash it and get on with their respective jobs.

James needs to get fit, work hard and be available for us.

Sick of all the negativity on here against him. He did work hard for the team last season, yes he might not have the legs for a full 90, but with grey, townsend and iwob we don't need him to last the full game.

Depends on your definition of working hard I suppose. He certainly didn't track back which often left us exposed. I certainly don't question his talent, he's naturally more talented than anyone else in our squad, but I do question how a 29yo professional athlete earning more in a week than most of us do in year can't "have the legs for a full 90". If he worked hard he'd be fit. This is probably why we couldn't give him away even when we would have covered part of his salary.

If he shows that then we have a chance of a European spot, possibly a domestic pot. He can make a massive difference.

We finished 10th. The year before we finished 12th. Expectations are low because we've been nothing but mediocre for years and now we can't invest to try and catch up

I agree. And to keep off social media where Everton are concerned.

IMO this is just delaying the inevitable: a departure in January.

You are probably correct mate but if you actually read through all the stuff (and there is a lot of it) the only person who has ever tried to instigate a move is Jorge Mendes, mainly so he can make more money. Within 3 days of Carlo leaving Mendes was in Milan trying to push him on to them. I'm no great fan of the player tbh and think there is way too much baggage that seems to go with him but some folk are going seriously OTT with their criticism of the player on this.
