It's very obvious that Benitez didn't want James, for his own reasons - doesn't fit his style, doesn't want to coach him, he doesn't want to be coached - whatever. Most of the posts I have done about being surprised by our decisions I have brought down to the good old choice that either the club has no strategy or is changing the strategy dramatically from year to year. Either way its stupid.
So how can the major investment in James - including the branding - be suddenly changed 11 months later. James was not a clever choice for a pandemic. Just imagine if he had been to do signing events at Everton One, Everton Two, imagine if we had done a player reveal in part of the ground or something...all clever commercial things that we do. And imagine if James had actually played in a team that had complementary skills around him, to allow him to also play to his strengths.
It's just another example of how we are lurching from one strategy to the next . In the past 5 years we have had:
- Spend big to buy success - 'Hollywood Koeman'
- PANIC! - Allardyce
- Ajax Dortmund Wannabes = young manager, DOF - Silva
- We think we're Barcelona and we can have our own - Big Dunc, Unsworth
- We're a big club - Ancelotti & James
- Sorry, we're actually Newcastle and have no money, see you later! - Benitez
I just don't buy that James is not committed and has a bad attitude. He is an old fashioned luxury player who works well if the team can accommodate him. We cant' accommodate him because our tactics and personnel don't match and Benitez won't or doesn't want to. This summer he has been given nothing to make him feel part of the club or that he's wanted, so equally he's just distancing himself so that he can get a move out. Why would he engage in badge kissing and go for a walk around BOld St with Tom Davies or get an Everton Tattoo if he's been told he's not wanted here? Obviously he's going to appear like he doesn't care about the club, cos the club doesn't care about him and doesn't want him! Well played Everton, you've got the PR right in this finally, in making us feel good about getting rid of the most exciting player we've had in years
