If you look at our strongest starting XI with everyone fit, left-sided midfield is the only area which stands out as not being the quality necessary for a top-4 challenging team. It's clearly the priority from what Martinez has said too. If we don't get a Perisic/Ayew/Firmino type player in Jan, it'll be because there weren't any good deals to be had, not because we weren't trying.

Edit: that's unless Pienaar finds his form again this season of course.

Over 20 goals as a front man in the season before he joined would argue this point.

Well the season before he joined us he played predominantly as a left winger so don't know where you got that from and it is a total different leauge anyway.

Am going off when he has played there in the prem and he has looked bang average to crap up front and was always offside. The lad can't play through the middle off the sholder of the defender he is much better running at people. besides can you really see him fitting into how we play with a striker? with his back to goal holding off defenders to bring others into play? I can't, would be a complete waste of his talents even if he did have the strength to do it(which he dosent).

I've always thought Mirallas is best on the left mate.

Eto'o Barkley Mirallas
Lukaku

With Naismith, Pienaar and McGeady as sub options!

It's defensive cover we need most.

Has Peresic recovered from his injury yet? If the rumours were true about our interest before his injury then Id like to see us go back in for him. Could do with a pacey winger or two. Atsu could do the job but without game time he isnt gonna build in confidence
I saw him on the Bundesliga highlights show this morning, playing for Wolfsburg. Looks recovered to me.

3 Million is dramatically undervaluing Gibson like. Even with his injury issues the lad is proven quality, and we'd be looking at more than 5million I'd imagine. 8-10 million if he keeps fit for a prolonged period of time.
lol

We paid £500k for him because of his injury issues. His injury issues have remained consistent - he's been out injured for about 2/3rds of his time here. 50 appearances in all competitions since he arrived in January 2012, and he's just turned 27 years old. Yes he's got talent, but his injury record is comparable to Darren Anderton or Owen Hargreaves.

You can imagine about £5m+ for him, but that's all you'd be doing - imagining.

Fair dos, I couldn't really choose between the two. The point for me though is that apart from Mirallas, none of them are good enough wide options for a top-class first team - I love me some Eto'o and Naismith but they're a bit out of position shunted out from the centre.

Defensive cover is slightly behind in terms of priorities as I see it but it's close enough to be splitting hairs!

True, it's nice to not be completely desperate in any position. Especially when, dare I say, Hibbert has been a decent enough stand in right back this season!

I'd love a striker like Morata to come in, even on loan - massive talent, would like us to get a deal sorted for Deulofeu to come back although I think he isn't allowed to play 3 teams in one season, we are lacking in those terms

I liked what I seen of Doumbia and Dzagoev last week vs Man City for CSKA and I don't think they'll cost too much to bring them here (although Russians haven't got a great track record in the prem)

As much as it is unlikely Lacazette would do wonders in a team like ours, would cost way too much for a rotation striker as would Lukaku

Other players we should look at are the two wingers in the Ukrainian league Yarmalenko and Konoplyanka, Berahino before liverpool snap him up and I like what I see of Vargas at Qpr

Who knows a lot about Shaktar? I like the look of their Brazilian striker, Luiz Adriano I'd like to know what you think of him and what he'd cost
