There is no European return, so that's moot
He has NOT solidified this defence - it's still a car crash (we just get more bodies behind the ball)
He did not unearth academy players like Davies and Holgate, they were already unearthed (and largely ignored until the last month)
All the buys so far have not been good: Bolasie is a disastrous purchase, Williams has been overall pretty poor, Schneiderlin is yet to show himself.

Stop trying to gild the lily...there isn't even a lily there to gild.

What do you mean there's no Euro football Dave?

If United win the EFL Cup, 7th gets Europe. So we're well in the hunt.

Hahahahaha - Holgate has been in every single squad or starting XI this season. For every game.

While it may be a stretch to say Koeman 'unearthed' them, you're - as always - ignoring facts.

Bolasie has not been a disaster. The stats and his performances back that up. You can't legislate for injury.

Williams has been a rock in our recent good run. Gana has been one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe this season.

Stek has been questionable but won us points at the start of the season. Valencia has proven useful if not of the required quality - though Koeman knows this.

Lookman looks a find (speaking for both Walsh and RK here) and Schneiderlin is proven quality.

Utd beat Southampton and were in Europe with 7 place

From my perspective, the exciting thing is that we are essentially giving younger lads half a season to show that they deserve a spot next season.

Say Sambou or Donker get on the bench and look half decent then arguably we save more money for not shelling out on 'squad' players and keep the wage bill down to pick up a few marquee players.

Arguably, we could push on for 6th but if we miss out by blooding a few more youth players and build the foundation for a balls out run next year then I'd be happy.

This.

Towards the end of the season I reckon we'll see more and more of the U23s given a chance.

I would have liked to have seen Dowell and Pennington go out on loan - and they probably still can in all fairness.

When you look at the squad for next season if you remove those who are getting on a bit and also players like Mori and Lennon who arent good enough for a champions league push were left with this;

GK - Robles
LB - Connolly
LCB - Galloway
RCB - Holgate / Pennington
RB - Coleman / Kenny
DM - Gana / Davies
CM - Schneiderlin / Walsh
AM - Barkley
FW - Lookman / Calvert-Lewin
FW - Lukaku

GK - We need a top keeper
LB - Someone to push Baines out
LCB - An upgrade on Mori
CB - Successor to Williams

So we basically need 4 players in the defensive positions.

We then need one more midfielder as well as a forward. So i'd say 6 players at a minimum and thats if the young lads step up either after being on loan (Connolly/Galloway) or push themselves into contention this season(walsh/pennington etc).

I think its great that we are giving them an opportunity to at least get on the bench and into the squad for next season...

However, We do need to sign GK / LB / LCB / FW of the highest quality in the summer as first choices. 4 top stars and some more young lads as rotation/backup.

Its bizarre that you have omitted players that have played a significant number of games this season and to dceent standard as well. You can't just take out the lines of Baines and Williams who are over 30 yet have had good seasons and there is no indication that this won't continue into next year. Of the older players only Jags and Barry look like they will be phased out in the short term. You've also obmitted McCarthy who accoridng to quotes this morning Koeman has talked up and Besic who may prove himself. Whilst there are question marks over how Bolaise will recover he is still part of the squad at the moment and will hopfully return. I'd also suggets that the fact Browning signed a new deal, unlike others, before going out on loan suggests he is part of the managers thinking.

Pressing needs for the summer are first choice keeper, first choice centre back and first choice wide attacker. After that it's a case of strengthening the squad like a back up centre forward.

The one thing the cull may do is give the chance to a few of the younger players to show that they can provide the number sto bulk up the squad and challenge the senior players as Davies, Holgate and Clavert-Lewin have done.

This a post that the Black Knight might type out with his last digit.

It's only a flesh wound...we can struggle on to next January with 13 players, Sire.

As for the calculations: there's always some f=guff that can be trailed out to excuse the owners of this club, whomever they be.

Good job there's 12 months to go until next January eh?
Imagine, a whole summer free from the distraction of international tournaments for Everton to acquire the players required for the next step.

January is; and always has been a stop gap, a pit-stop. It is not the time for a club with serious aspirations of anything other than avoiding relegation to undertake volume transfer business.

You know this as well as anyone Dave. It seems like you're just playing to the crowd here.

That's a very good point, and that's what I meant about how Koeman is operating.

Our primary targets weren't available? Okay, but we aren't gonna go out and get any old player.

People saying we should have got a forward in - but what's the point if they weren't an improvement on Valencia?

I'd have liked Gabbiadini, as I think in this current system he'd be very good as that second-striker, but I ain't devastated we didn't go for him.
I agree completely with this, but I think the thing to remember is that pretty much everybody agrees with this. Nobody wants us to go out and sign dross just so we can say we did, the argument that this is what people want is completely redundant, despite it being dragged out repeatedly at the end of every window.

What people want is more deals like the Schneiderlin one. They want the manager and board to have identified targets, and to get them in by paying the fee and wages that will secure their signings. People see that we were interested in Belfodil, they know that the manager mentioned Depay and Keane, and they wonder why we haven't been able to go out and buy those players, or others like them. Of course it's not easy, I don't think anybody's saying it is - but nor is it impossible.

I'm genuinely not concerned by our lack of signings, the season is all but over and I've said all season that 7th would represent a decent return in my opinion. I can see why some people are bothered though. It's definitely fair to say that we are lacking in certain areas, and we have now failed to address that in two windows under this regime, despite supposedly having an obscene amount of money to spend (from the owner's own mouth) and bringing in a new head of recruitment. It's easy to say we'll just do it in the summer, but last summer people were saying we'll just do it in January - and we didn't. It's not difficult to understand why people may be a little edgy and wonder why the summer window should be any better than the last two.

Worth mentioning that we only have two midweek games left between now and the end of the season (and that includes the game tonight) - barring a really unfortunate spate of injuries, we actually shouldn't need a massive squad - every professional player should be capable of playing a game every 7 days

It's next season when (hopefully) Europe and (hopefully) an extended cup run or two will mean a bigger squad is required

Why pay massively over the odds now when a big squad isn't a requirement until next season?

lol

Even by your standards that's ridiculous Dave.

So we just get more bodies behind the ball, when the opposition are attacking, what a novel idea, I think that's called defending mate.

Oh and btw we've only conceded 23 league goals this season, the 4th best in the division behind Chelsea, Spurs and United.

That compares to 32 and 34 conceded at the same point in the previous 2 seasons, not improved the defence? hahahaha, ok mate x
