So Isco, Vrsaljko, Ghoulam, Izquierdo, and Saza. All on frees. All would add something, but we really are in the bargain bucket now...

There are 4 possible explanations for this I can think of and I'm not sure which is the worst:
1. They've really tried and did all the right things but, given the many challenges the club is facing, no players want to sign for us.
2. They've accepted relegation is probable, and decided not pay over the odds to buy in more crap players who are unlikely to keep us up and will only hamstring or finances further as we seek to get promoted at the first attempt.
3. We really are in more of a financial hole than we realise and the money from Gordon was needed to keep us afloat
4. Everyone at the club is an utter imbecile who can barely manage to stay alive, let alone run a business.
its 2 and mostly 3

No doubt, but if he's not helping then he's part of the problem.

We've not had a pot to piss in before but connections in the game/pragmatism brought in who we had to bring in.
Aye. We were strapped for cash during most of Moyes's reign, but we were still able to do deals. This, sadly, feels different, but the reason why is open to debate.

Are we funnelling money towards the stadium, are we still constrained by our overspending, or are those behind the scenes so incompetent that we've left it late?

Maybe all?

I said this in June but still not sure I'm right.

Has Thelwell been directly/ultimately responsible for transfers before joining us?

Nope, just like Walsh never was when he as at Leicester.

I remember reading an article when Thelwell joined New York Red Bulls that he wouldn't be looking to sign player immediately for the first team but look to promote youth - so not even sure if he made a signing there.

I have no time for the Board, obviously, but Thelwell is paid to do a job, and he manifestly hasn't done it. There was at least some money available, and he hasn't had the skill and ingenuity to use it to a productive end. What are we paying him for, if not that?????

Our last last three Director of Football appointments have ALL been very highly rated and had great successes at previous clubs.

They don't just become terrible at their job as soon as they work here.

Might be unpopular but did anyone move today that was a). A realistic price and would come to Everton and b). Would have improved us?

I know it’s unpopular but I haven’t seen anyone move today that hits both those criteria. We can’t throw money around wrecklessly on players who “might” be good enough. Better to bank that Gordon money and spend it on players we are 100% convinced will improve us in the summer.
Today isn’t the only day we could sign people, and just because players didn’t move today doesn’t mean they weren’t available for transfer. But apart from that, great point.
