January Transfer Window 2023

Signing Gana made sense.
We needed a new midfield immediately and Gana was a cheap option who already knew the club and the league.

Of course, we need to look out for the best young talent around, but they don't all succeed either and sometimes they can block the path for the young players in the academy.

If there was an easy fix then I think every club would already be doing it, not just Everton.

We now have Onana, Garner and looking like Price as the young midfielders.

Think were lacking a player with "star" quality there, a proper ball player who can run games.

Not his biggest fan Zaha's contract expires in the summer.

Could be worth bringing him in for a small fee in January. 3 year contract as a stopgap.

Half the division lacks one of them in fairness.

2 Key things we're missing (although one is spread across 2/3 positions.

1 - Creator who drives with the ball, has flair, has good vision and technique.
2 - Attackers with some end product.

THe lack of number 2 worries me massively that we will go down.

I saw a whatsapp message I sent to my wife while we were away in Wales, possibly the bournemouth game, or one of. Was looking for something else and just saw that i put "I cant take another 6 months of this"

I find it really, really hard to see with these attackers where the goals that will keep us up will come from.

- Gordon has the potential if he can find some form, he has the technique - his finish in Australia for his hat-trick showed that he does have that technique, it's just about whether he can do it consisently, which is a big ask for his age.

- Gray zero end product
- DCL always injured, and has had one hot-streak under Ancelotti where he was implicity employed to be in the box, specifically 6-12 yards from goal. Doesn't strike the ball with conviction.
- McNeill has a good game occassionally but offers next to nothing most of the time.
- Iwobi - has become very consistent technically, but doesnt score - wont be the reason we go down.
- Maupay - garbage, dont know what they were thinking adding him to the squad.

Apologies for the negative post, not a fan of doing it but I'm really struggling to see where the goals come from, because if we started scoring, all this defending the defenders are having to do will become much, much easier. Defence have been pretty solid this year, but you can only defend for so long without conceding.

An abundance of number 2s in that squad. I don't mean right backs or refer to your point 2 either ! ??

Took a real break from football on all levels during the World Cup.

Didn't engage in any aspect of the World Cup and at the same time took a break from social media, newspapers etc when it concerned domestic football. Proper 4 week break from it all and feel all the better for it.

Therefore I'm about 4-6 weeks off the pace with transfer news. Has there been any credible links in terms of sales or purchases? What's the likely transfer budget for January? 100M? spend what you raise?
No one outside the boardroom will know what's available to spend, so any number is likely just plucked from thin air, but it isn't going to be anywhere close to £100m. Unless we sell one or two, we'll probably be working with a limited budget again.

Just so little quality in the front 3 that play no matter the players selected.

I've seen foundations of what Lampard is trying to put into place, and mostly, while he isn't innocent of making errors at times, no matter which front three he selects, there isn't the quality to go and hurt teams.

Also tired of seeing Gordon on the right, he is clearly more comfortable wide left and cutting in. Need to bring in a striker who can start and be effective (doesnt need to bang in 20 goals for the remainder of the season, but if he can grab 10 and contribute to play) and also a right winger who is comfortable that side.

Even Mcneill who is left footed looks uncomfortable on the right. Burnley STH in work is adament that years of Dyche playing him wide left as a 'defensive winger-type' has ruined him.

I think there will be something there in the budget, how we spend it will be dictated to our wiggleroom with PL P&L like we saw in summer.

I'm desperate to see us hit summer safe in the premier league, once that comes. I think we suddenly get alot more freedom to spend due to contracts expiring and stuff like that.

yes have thought the same for a while, most of Gordon’s best games last season came from off the left. But he keeps picking gray, who has been poor 1 goal and 1 assist in 12 months.

Get a new player for the right and give Gordon 10 games off the left

Largely, yes. Of course, for every Mina and Davies and Begovic to come off the books, we've put the likes of McNeil and Maupay and Gana on to the wage bill who have offered very little so far. Wouldn't surprise me at all if Pickford and Gordon move on in summer for sizeable fees.

I dont think Gordon will unless he has a rocket of a second half, if Gordon goes for decent money in Summer it means he's had a greart 2nd half which probably means hes contributed enough to warrant the extension anyway.

Bare in mind Davies/Begovic are probably on buttons in relative terms.

Mina and Doucoure are the key ones really that will fetch the wedge back in. Coady will be bought most likely on a full.

Coleman wont be on a small contract, has had a few contract extensions so far so that would have tallied up.

Townsend? Doing punditry, probably an indication that his time as a footballer is up due to that bad injury. Perhaps a few appearances towards the end of the season who knows.

Pickford
Patterson Coady Tarkowski Mykolenko
Onana
Im very comfortable with those 6 players as starters. I'd even say that if we had them all in the squad for the next 5 seasons it would be a positive.

Clearly we fall down in the other 5 positions and we need to bring in a couple and develop a couple and we wont be far away.

If Garner and Gordon come good it would be massive for us.

Completely agree mate. I'd even stick Gana in there for the 'back six/backfour and 2 pivots' role for the short-term. Problem is that we have nobody who can play that "3rd midfielder" role to aid the two holding players.

That may be a little harsh on Iwobi, who has been a standout in 2022. If we played with one holding player then Iwobi could be that box-to-box link.

I think our front three is so poor, If we had anyone who could control a football like Iwobi can, I'd be sticking Iwobi out right, giving Patterson that licence to push on and then putting that tidy footballer we dont have in that space Iwobi takes now.

Whether that completely hurts Iwobi i dont know, but i'd have more faith in him understnading how to attack and coming inside than anyone else in that position, at present at least.
