January Transfer Window 2023

I think the question on how positive our transfer activity is going to be this window has already been answered, with the Mouthwatering recall option being taken up on 'Sir Ellis Simms'.
Tho I think Sunderland had fed us back some glowing references on how warm he had kept there bench in such hard times..

There is in fact a lot of harm involved in this. See the last 6 years of Everton Football Club.
No... he's a young striker that has done well, looked good when coming on for France in the WC and I'm talking paying £20m and £100k a week for him.
There is very little downside to them finances.
The real issue is the lad will have at least 40 teams he'd rather play for than us.

I don't think he is ready but would rather recall Simms than waste monies on Diaz and/or the Coventry lad when Simms goals per minute is similar

Yep. Brighton is owned by Tony Bloom who became a billionaire using stats for betting purposes. Brentford is owned by his former partner. They both use stats to identify players who work well within their teams' systems and sign them for reasonable prices.
All clubs are using data and algorithms to identify players. The focus is on the predictive algorithms that forecast a players ceiling performance based on their actual data. There have will have been many algorithms developed which will have varying success rates, but the principles will be similar.,

The question is how much you believe the predictions vs how much actual scouting you have done.

People absolutely frothing to bring Champo strikers in for not inconsiderable sums, but we decide to pay the negligible cost to being a striker performing well in that league back to the club, and they’re spitting feathers.

If we had the realistic opportunity (read: money) to bring in someone levels above that, we would.

As it is, we can pool whatever meagre resources we DO have into a wide attacker who can actually create a chance or two and maybe even someone who can pull a few strings from the middle of the park.

If we’re going to insist on playing the same direct game whether Dom is in the team or not, at least put a big lad up top. I refuse to believe Simms could be less effective than Li’l Neal in that role. We might even stumble across a solution with both up top together.

With the exception of Simms going with what we’ve got or too soon to say that? Moves need to happen or the only move we will make is down to the championship

Thats what i would do. Play Maupay with a targetman, it would certainly create more issues for opponents than playing Maupay as the targetman.
For what it’s worth, me too.

Maupay was never a world beater but he wasn’t/isn’t as crap as we make him look, either. Stick with the 3 at the back, 3 central and those two up top.

Simms/Dom make it stick up top, with Maupay, Iwobi and the FBs running beyond. Wouldn’t be pretty but more effective than watching our wingers aimlessly belt crosses into the stands.

Yeah your right there, but I don't think we should have ever sent him out on loan in the first place given the position we were in regarding strikers.
So to suddenly want to bring him back now isn't down to a sign of how well he's been performing it's a sign of desperation. cos nothing has changed in our attacking options since sending him on loan.

Agree on all points. Maupay isnt Ronaldo, but hes decent and had a one in threeish goal/assist ratio at Brighton. Him now having one in twelve says a lot about how hes being used. I know we need attackers, but im certain Maupay would do so much better if he was played in a role hes capable of. No amount of training, running or effort will make him a decent targetman, hes simply too small. Frank seems like a decently intelligent man so I cannot fathom why he keeps similar tactics with Neil on as with DCL. Ie we need to change tactics or bring in a different striker, we are currently hamstringing ourselves.

He doesn't know how to do better. He's a decent guy but he's a poor manager.

I think, as was the case at Chelsea, he tries to make the players fit the system and not vice-versa.

The only real hope we have is that he’s young in managerial terms and will ditch that bad habit, though he’s shown no real signs of doing so, so far.

Like I said, I’d like to see a shift to 2 up top but the reality is that Simms will fill in for Dom as required and Maupay will be rotated with the other wide forwards as Lampard panics his way through a few more crap results before he’s given the heave ho.

Now that we scored one whole incredible season-defining point in a week from Wolves home and against Manchester City away I doubt Mr Thelwell deems a new striker as being necessary. Just under 1 point average per game, he's probably willing to risk a 36 point return and hope for safety.
