Just moronic unfortunately. I want Gordon to succeed but you can't gamble like that on a player who had shown little to suggest he'd ever reach that level.
If Chelsea didn't offer what the valuation was as a down payment - and this is what I'm led to believe was the issue, not the total fee itself - then it is what it is. As annoying as it is.

IF Everton said they wanted £40m up front, then it was up to Chelsea to pay it. They were happy to brief Ornstein that they'd go to £60m total, yet they didn't even offer what Everton ultimately outlined from the very start, mate.

Everton wasted the money they did have by signing a striker who doesn't fit the rest of the side (not Maupay's fault but it's not like he'd be scoring 25 in a free-flowing team, anyway) and a winger who is just so, so, so average it hurts.

That's cost us nearly £30m in total fees, even if the initial down payments were small.

Anyway, back to MGW, shame it didn't work out because I like him but he'd have also cost a lot of money.

No, if Chelsea were willing to structure a deal that paid 60m total in any form we should have signed it before they thought better of it.

Now if it was say 30m with some not so realistic clauses to get to 60m that is different obviously and I'm not privy to all the details. But we're talking about a player who is just simply not worth any of the figures that are being thrown about and to be stubborn and not get a deal done is bad management of your assets.

i think we'll bring in MGW during the summer window.

You've written the same thing twice, so it isnt different.

No matter the fondness for local players and all that - not snapping their hands off for anything above 30m was imo reckless and negligent. Even on his best days, Gordon does not look like a 30m footballer to me, or like he is ever going to become one. Since he is still our player, Im hoping to be wrong on that, but I wouldnt not be shocked if that was our one chance to cash in big on him. It wouldve been pure profit and a big help with out current financial situation.

Most the time development isn't so drastic that your first 70 odd games are crap and you go on to be a high level player. He might develop into an average player but a 50m type guy isn't very likely given how low the starting point has proven to be. It's the same thing that made Godfrey a questionable move. He was so so bad at Norwich that even with reasonable improvement he's still not much more than average if that. It's why McNeil was a questionable move as well.

I'm all for going younger with our signings, but just young isn't enough of a reason to do it.

Thats exactly it. With really talented players, you can see it when they break through. They have something other players dont, be it amazing ball control, a great footballing brain or natural passing/finishing abilities. Gordon just doesnt have anything to his game that seperates him from the median winger to me. He runs a lot and sometimes he pulls of a good stepover, but other than that i just dont see it. Ive called him a poor mans Mirallas with a good work ethic, and thats about what he is currently. Anthony is pretty much the same player now as when he came back from his loan spell, with very few improvements compared to what a lot of Evertonians expected. Predictably, its turned into this weird love/hate thing where he either cannot do anything wrong because 'hes a local lad' or he is a selfobsessed waste of space who bought into his own hype. We see the same with Pickford, tho to his credit, he has improved a lot since he signed for us. He is not nearly the keeper some Evertonians want him to be, but hes decent now with the ability to pull off some really good saves. I honestly never thought he would get to the decent to good PL-keeper level he is right now, so maybe Im going to be proven wrong about Gordon too, but i doubt it. Hopefully Chelsea or some other rich club tries buying him again this month or in the summer, but i doubt anyone is going to offer anything near the supposed 60m from last summer.

I mean I think Pickford was at least an average keeper in that year with Sunderland so the starting point was a bit higher. That's the difference. And it isn't always easy to see or get right. I just think we've pick some guys to put faith in that aren't that close.

I thought he was godawful. I remember us being linked with him not long after we played Sunderland and hammered them 3-0, a game where Pickford helped Everton more than Sunderland. He was one of the worst keepers in the league until Carlo came around, proned to silly errors beyond what Ive seen from any pro footballer. That game against Newcastle where he was prancing about, teasing the newcastle supporters, only to let in a bunch of goals and us losing the game after leading with several goals is still haunting my nightmares.

Weird day when I'm defending Pickford lol

I've always thought he was kind of average for us. Maybe a little worse to start and at Sunderland.

Lampard signed off on him too, and Maupay.

The latter I can forgive them for in the sense that I really think Lampard thought he could get the team playing how he wants them to, maybe naively, when it comes to getting the ball on the deck around the box and that would suit Maupay's strengths. But he hasn't been able to do it, for a variety of reasons.

McNeil there's no real excuse for, from anyone involved, and they were both involved in that signing.
I see it the other way.

Can forgive McNeill because of his age, and his potential he has shown. He does he a good whip on him even if his training routine is running in custard.

Maupay has always been distinctly average and I question what I’m earth they were e expecting when they signed him. Doesn’t fit any profile in the team whatsoever.

Keep noticing other premier league clubs are linked with teenagers abroad, yet we are just linked with man utd reserves.
Also worryingly seen that Forest want rid of Dennis.
