If Chelsea didn't offer what the valuation was as a down payment - and this is what I'm led to believe was the issue, not the total fee itself - then it is what it is. IF Everton said they wanted £40m up front, then it was up to Chelsea to pay it. They were happy to brief Ornstein that they'd go to £60m total, yet they didn't even offer what Everton ultimately outlined from the very start, mate.
Everton wasted the money they did have by signing a striker who doesn't fit the rest of the side (not Maupay's fault but it's not like he'd be scoring 25 in a free-flowing team, anyway) and a winger who is just so, so, so average it hurts.
That's cost us nearly £30m in total fees, even if the initial down payments were small.
Anyway, back to MGW, shame it didn't work out because I like him but he'd have also cost a lot of money.
