January transfer window 2024

Onana is young and has potential. Younger? We're still in 17th mind you.

The only reason to sell him in this window is to generate cash. If you believe that premise, then nothing more than a loan is coming in.

There may be another way to look at it...

We have Garner + Onana in CM. Gana off to Afcon and Gomes likely moved on. Both of them out of contract in summer as well.

All points to us needing 2 more CMs along with a mid term Doucoure replacement.

Thats purely in midfield we need 3 players so perhaps the idea is to sell Onana and revamp midfield?

Otherwise, it may be that while the likes of Caicedo and Rice went for £115mil odd perhaps clubs are sniffing out what we might accept and the fee might still be significant but not as much as the summer as they saw with Caicedo.

Thelwell may have 3 wonderkids hes spotted at good value and see that moving Onana on quickly gives us the inside track.

Nope.

Skint club trying to get funds.

That's all this would be.

Whether or not you rate Onana as highly as some do, it's imperative that we hold on to him and Branthwaite at least until the summer imo.

I would love to hold on to them longer but reality is that their sales give us the money to rebuild, and that's a job to do in the summer not in January.

If we sell and spend the money now I don't think it will go as far as we need it to.

I would completely agree with this, except for one caveat: let's say we "win" our appeal on the points deduction, but we end up with a transfer ban instead. This seems like a real possibility to me. How do we then conduct the necessary sales and rebuild this summer?

It's pretty clear that we should be building around these guys for the future, but realistically - barring some miracle - Onana and Branthwaite are both going to be moved on sooner probably than later. So maybe we should consider letting Onana go this month and starting some of the rebuild a little early, with an eye towards that possible transfer ban. I'd still wait on Branthwaite, though. He's the real gem that we should only let be pried away when it becomes completely unavoidable.

If we're intent on doing a deal on onana then both united and arsenal have kids we should be demanding as part of the deal. Whether they would come or not is a different matter but it shouldn't be a hard sell given Onana and Garners game time

We currently have 16 players in July 2024, when all loans return and contracts expire, if we do get a transfer ban, we may as may just fold.

Would like us to get one cm now so we can have them and build them to make more of an inpact like a chermitti. Then look to replace onana in the summwr

As already pointed out by goat, if this happens we are screwed no two ways about it.

I don't think that a transfer ban will be on the cards though personally. I don't know any more than you, but just feel we either will keep the 10 point deduction or have it reduced to 5 points if our appeal is successful.

Transfer ban surely wouldn't make sense considering our overspend is relating to stadium costs and not transfers.

Right, which is precisely my point. We should be planning for all contingencies.

If I remember correctly, in our original response to the commission, we suggested a fine / transfer ban as punishment. So it seems to me that the appeal board may very well just say, "Ok, we'll give you the points back and then go with the punishment you asked for yourselves."

Like you said, we will be well short on squad numbers in the summer whether we sell anyone or not. If we do get a transfer ban, how do we cope with that? I mean, we're not just going to forfeit the season, so we have to do something to fill out the squad. Bring up youth players? Obviously that just makes us prime relegation candidates for next year.

Surely the club has to at least look at this possibility and be a little more proactive in this window than we would normally be. But then I do remember which club we're talking about here...

Wouldn't be a bad idea if we knew when the ban was coming in but as it stands there's only one thing that's certain and it's we are currently -10. Potentially -19 so we cannot weaken our squad further in the 'hope' of a transfer ban.

Devil's advocate, but does selling Onana for XX amount and buying 2 or 3 players for XX amount weaken the squad?
