I thought he was excellent. Big lad , brave , combative and very pleasantly surprised at his technical ability....2 footed and composed on the ball.

With no European games he is fine as 4th choice centre back. It's the 2nd and 3rd choices that concerned me.

Did very well there, great passing, great defending, if he can continue to grow on that I expect him to be ready in a season or two. Would love to see him get more time through the end of the season.

Could save us a fair chunk of cash having to buy a backup defender. If Gibson can also get into first team reckoning we’d have 5 options at CB.

A bit of an acid test for Brands here, and whether he can talk the talk as well as walk the walk regarding pathways. Gibson has done what is asked of him and this lad looks really impressive. Unless one leaves, it seems pointless bringing one in.

The ideal, I suppose is one of Keane/Mina go and we sign a lad who's quite pacy like a Gabriel. Then I really like our options.

I'll out more tomorrow when I'm a bit less tired but very impressed with him tonight. He is about 18 months younger than when Stones was played at Stoke away, and to me he looked just as impressive as Stones did that day. Jamie Carragher was purring about him. He looks to have the lot, big, powerful, reads the game well, times a tackle and good on the ball. A great signing.

You've put more than the rest of us already - think you're safe.

Possibly the idea is that Gibson returns and fights for a place and Branthwaite goes on loan. Then if Gibson manages to do well, we have Holgate, Gibson and Branthwaite (on loan) as decent young defensive talent. (I think Gibson can also cover left back?)
