2023/24 Jarrad Branthwaite

Was reported at £1m which isn’t insignificant in that league.
Personally thought 15% sounded a lot, but reading up it seems Stones had a similar sell on that netted Barnsley a further £6-£9m in the end too apparently.
Suprised these figures aren’t capped tbh.
I think funds need to flow down the pyramid so I have no problem with the sell on clause. Will do wonders at Carlisle who have just got relegated I think

Tarkowski v Branthwaite

if you look at their defensive stats: -

Clean Sheets - Tarkowski (13) - Branthwaite had 12
Blocks - Tarkowski (56) - Branthwaite had 36
Interceptions - Tarkowski (56) - Branthwaite had 50
Tackles - Branthwaite (66) - Tarkowski had 61
Successful Tackles - Tarkowski (42) - Branthwaite had 32
Last Man Tackles - Tarkowski (3) - Branthwaite had 2
Clearances - Tarkowski (186) - Branthwaite had 157
Headed Clearances - Tarkowski (107) - Branthwaite had 82
Aerial Battles Won - Tarkowski (145) - Branthwaite had 95
Appearances - Tarkowski (38) - Branthwaite had 35
Fouls - Branthwaite (25) - Tarkowski had 45
Penalties Conceded - both had 1

Branthwaite had a great season but there are definitely arguments to be made for other players as well
Stats can be misleading, but one of the last stats you show is appearances. Branthwaites stats in other catagories will have been higher if he had the same game time. You also have to factor in that we probably get targeted down the right hand side more so than the left, so Tarks has more work to do covering that side.

I’m not picking sides or who is the better player because we’d be goosed without either of them. You just have to look at everything holistically.

the appearances stat is an interesting one because the other guy said that Branthwaite was "by a considerable distance" our player of the season yet he played 3 games less than Tarkowski.

Now if Branthwaite had more blocks, interceptions, successful tackles, clearances, headed clearances, aerial battles won etc.. having played 3 games less than Tarkowski then that would be seriously impressive stats and a very strong argument for him to be our player of the season or at least in the running for it.

if you are talking about just this season alone then arguably Tarkowski is in the mix as our player of the season ahead of someone like Branthwaite and playing more games is a stronger argument for him to be our player of the season as he has played in every single game whereas Branthwaite hasn't.

if you are talking about long term potential then obviously Branthwaite is the more exciting player

These are both central defenders you want playing for you. Branthwaite offers more going forward in possession, as well as the promise of further development.

Fair play if we have to sell Branthwaite, but replacing him in the center of defense won't be easy. What is certain is that we don't have an adequate replacement on the present bench.
