Davies is sinking fast and will soon disappear from view. Local boys have to be exceptional to outshine the transferees with the strange foreign names. Just a fact of life. He is not exceptional and will probably struggle to make his presence felt. We shall see next season unless he is fobbed off somewhere before it even starts.

We are definitely going to have to play a different way at times with Gana gone. I am guessing the midfield will see Gbamin and Gomes and at times when he plays Delph taking it in turns to sit and other times to push forward. Its more of a fluid midfield than as clearly designated jobs as it was last year. Obviously Gbamin will be the main DM but I can see these midfielders being able to do both, more box to box.

Problem being is he's not good enough. As much as I like him, what does he actually offer?

No idea if he will fill Gana’s shoes, but I’m hoping it gives us more than one dimension in our midfield play.

This.

I get what @CRIMHEAD is saying about Gueye’s distribution being good enough for us to keep the ball, but whilst it kept things ticking over it didn’t help us creatively. He didn’t get the ball forward quickly enough, rarely carried the ball with any threat and teams could pretty much let him have it knowing he wouldn’t hurt them. Hopefully if teams do the same now to Gbamin he’ll drive forward with it forcing defenders out. His longer passing will also get our forward players on the ball quicker so they’ll have space to play in.

What he lacks in terms of tackling when compared to gana he makes up for in his passing ability
And physicality, Gana was great at pressing and intercepting but he wasn't the biggest there were games we were bullied in last season. Watford and West Ham spring to mind, this fella is a unit which will be useful in the air and in the physical battles

Effort I suppose.

The thing with Davies is that he is all effort. Its a crucial season for him now as i think once business is complete this summer he will be on the sidelines mostly.

Next summer we will probably not have much to do in terms of the odd first team incoming player for quality but we will be likely targeting youth and at that point Davies could be at risk.

If were aiming for a box to box type player now then he has the engine for it but seems to lack quality. Having said that, Gomes isnt very good defensively and Gbamin were yet to see but could be decent for us.

It wouldnt shock me if we went 433 next season and Delph, Gomes, Gbamin, Sigurdsson and Davies were competing for 2 positions next to a new superstar midfielder.

That just pushes Davies further down the pecking order.

Will be interesting to see how Gbamin slots in for us and the level of quality he has.

Effort I suppose.
Effort is great and at times that tenacity and dedication is vital in game, yet it in the majority of cases it shouldn’t negate a need for quality.

If he can’t improve the technical aspects of his game, or at least show those abilities, then he’s not going to be chosen regularly to start.

Davies will have opportunities these season, but if he doesn’t really impose himself then I expect within a season or two he will be allowed to go.

He carried it forward PLENTY. But yeah, your word "with any threat" was the key. He simply wasn't a threat. That's all I'm saying. I'm not saying he was amazing with the ball, I'm simply saying he did contribute to the offense, he did take care of the ball, but while he was awesome pushing forward without the ball - NO ONE got to more balls that him - when he had it he wasn't that dangerous. Wonderful player, though.

I don't think Gbamin will drive forward with the ball much at all, but he will allow Gomes to push up higher and come back less often because Gbamin has a better passing range and accuracy. Doesn't mean I think Gbamin is an upgrade, though. Although his still has a lot of upside.
