How can this not be a bad signing? It's been a disastrous waste of money. Probably cost circa £50 million by this point for nothing back.

Sometimes, you just plain get unlucky. It's like arguing that Bolton shouldn't have extended Stu Holden on his level of play for them in his first year, because they should have known that he was going to have a terrible injury against United a few months later that would ultimately end his career.
Debatably it wasn't a great signing, but arguing that it was a terrible one requires believing that a DoF has control over variables that they simply do not control.
