2024/25 Jesper Lindstrom

He’s what you get when your budget and remit is ‘available and cheap’. He’s not the worst in the world but there’s precious little there to work with.
This is it. As the club had already wasted its entire budget on a centre half we didn't need, we were left scouring the free and unwanted categories, which is obviously not going to bring in players of any quality.

He's not a winger, he's a number 10. Was great in Germany. Moved to Italy, played out wide and that was it.

But never going to get a chance in his natural position.

Lost count of the amount of players we've said this about over the last decade. For me it's just a lazy excuse for poor form. Even if number 10 is his preferred role I haven't seen anything which suggests he'd start throwing in good performances if we played him there. In fact, I'd argue he'd look even more lost in the middle against strong centre halves and defensive mids.

I did feel he looked more confident and assertive yesterday even though it resulted in very little. Problem is we're half way through the season to get to this point.

Not unheard of any foreign player taking time to settle apart from at Everton of course where expectation is to hit ground running. Jury still out for me given this and indeed the team management. There is also obvious negative which the more partisans agmonst are not going to forgive unless he scores a winner against them etc.

I don’t think it’s a lazy excuse. The long-standing debate about Scholes, Lampard, and Gerrard in the England setup demonstrates how shifting a player from their natural central position to the wing can diminish their effectiveness. Anyone who has played football understands that adapting to a new position is challenging, and when you factor in transitioning to a different league and style of play, it becomes a valid consideration.

There is my issue I have, I think he'll be one of those players benefiting from a different line up. But the problem is we don't have actual wingers in the squad.

Neither Harrison, McNeil nor him fill that profile for me.

Ndiaye for me is also rather a 10 or shadow striker. But from the current squad he has the best attributes to play winger.

McNeil also for me plays better centrally, so the job wasn't done on the transfer market for me.

Yes but unlike Lindstrom the 3 players you mentioned would actually show ability in any position you played them. It's not that he's had effectiveness diminished - he just looks like he's nowhere good enough for the Premier League. The problem he faces on the wing will be exactly the problems he faces in the middle too.

Half way through the season, yes.

It often takes foreign players a season to adjust.

Never understood why people play well in one position, a club buys them and then plays them in another. I get players need to be flexible but from what I gather he was just played out wide, and then we have gone and done the same - madness.

Maybe that’s the problem with the club mate….if you’ve lost count of players where it’s been said they are not playing in their natural position, maybe the club needs to buy and play players for, and in their natural positions.

Plus a playing the no10 role and his effectiveness in it also very much depends on the dynamic with his team mates e.g, do they have a lot of forward runners who help to create space. We don’t have that.
