Essentially they really just are mate

Not at all.

You stand for the first one, try to react. You may not save it unless it goes down the middle but the other 4 guys waiting all think you are going to stand, so know they need to hit the corners. Mentally weaker players may miss the target or you my save the poorer ones.

If you jump out go low and dive before he kicks it, players will just slow the run up and put it the other way. You could tell they were doing that cos hardly any penalties headed for the corners just the opposite side to Robles.

MOTM tonight, looking better with each game, fair enough he couldn't look much worse.

If he keeps it up he might just pip Neuer to the team of the year GK award this time next year.

Wouldn't say he was MOTM. That was Mirallas by a mile....even if he played less than an hour of it

They aren't though at all.

Where did Mark Noble put his last pen v Everton?

He's their pen taker and you don't study where he puts his pens in a cup game?
That just makes it an informed guess, there's no guarantee he will put it in the same place next time. Only the taker knows where he will put it. Everyone else, including the keeper is guessing.

A guess is to conclude without sufficient information.

You study the information and it isn't a guess

This won't be a popular view based on everyone's reactions to how he played tonight but I still don't think he's good enough for the level we need. talk of him being our no1 keeper is just a bit crazy.

Lots of poor aspects of his game, doesn't command the area.. doesn't come for aerial balls... Doesn't rush out to claim balls he could make it to before the defender/attacker. And his diving for the pens was abysmal. If he just stayed on his line and used his big frame to dive at the correct moment we would be through.

He played well tonight at general shot stopping. Made some saves look slightly better than they were imo. And had a bit of a mare for their 1st. Was sliding on his knees as it trickled to the side of him. Should have stayed big.. Not run out at it so far and should have used his leg to save if the shot came in.

I fully expect I'm gonna get slated for this post
Think that is the worst goalkeeping (shootout) performance I have ever seen . Made every penalty easy for them,by diving two weeks too early, and basically giving them an open goal to aim at , absolute joke , although his in play performance was fairly good.west Ham will never have an easier shootout !

All penalty saves are just guesses he was knackered

There is guessing then there is diving out the way of the ball before the player has even kicked the thing! Probably what stung the most for me tonight was that because of this I had no faith he could save any of the penalties

You can study it all you want which would govdnyou a better chance at GUESSING correctly

Wrong again, if you study a pen taker and he puts every single pen in his whole carter bottom left are you guessing or are you being smart?

You're guessing.

You're wrong on this mate get over it studying a kick takers history only gives you a informed guess.

A guess is to conclude without sufficient information.

You study the information and it isn't a guess

Have a look what guess means then come back to me

Hence why you put the pressure on the kicker like I said in my previous post. Not just dive before he kicks it and hope for the best.

Mark noble missed his first pen in 3 seasons after seeing Lloris diving the way he always goes and he tried to change his mind last minute.

It's just a guess though

You study the information and it isn't a guess

So how do you quantify whether you have sufficient information?

You can back up your point by highlighting scenarios that will never ever happen but that indicates to me that you are clutching at straws.

What if said penalty taker decides for the first time in his life to put it elsewhere? Looks like it was just a guess after all. Sure, you can prepare and play the probabilities but ultimately its a guess. No amount of information can make the goalie KNOW where the taker will put the ball, and if you don't know, then you are guessing.
