John Stones transfer saga

Indeed. He signed no defender of note who came close to being considered a decent signing - even their club captain he brought in was utter gash.

Moyes brought in players for low fees or from obscure locations and they turned out to be gems. Martinez didn't. The stature of the club barely matters with such players - one manager signed Seamus Coleman; the other Gary Caldwell.

Of course the stature of the club matters.

Ability to employ a strong scouting network is vital in signing players like Coleman and there's no way Wigan's would have been anywhere near ours.

Maybe Martinez could have done better but there is no way we are comparing like for like.

You are right there is no way we can compare like for like, my main concern is not comparing like for like either.
The bigger picture is the ability to build a world class back four for the next decade which is as good as the last decade.
We have tiny budget and less comprehensive scouting network compare to top 4 teams but our backline is almost as good as thiers. Duplicating this trend means being successful in 3 out of 4 future defensive signings as our manager.
The question is can Martinez do it? He has the knowledge of UK and Spanish market yet non of his defensive signing stands out. Are there any youth defensive prospect emerging from wigan from the Martinez legacy currently?

What, for Lescott? Jagielka? That really obscure league called the Championship? I'd understand that view if that list was purely the likes of Per Kroldrup, but actually Wigan's signings were generally from further afield.

There'd be a marginal difference in terms of resources but nothing that could explain away the massive difference in quality in defensive signings between Moyes and Martinez.

in my opinion Bobby is an attacking minded manager and is all about this unique style of play where as Moyes made sure there was a strong defence and there was enough up front to produce goals. Didn't care about the style of play just wanted results.

but he bought angel rangel and ashley williams for swansea when they were in the 3rd division, they're now still starters for swansea who are well into their establishment of being a premier league club. with one being club and country captain.

Martinez's spending for players in during his time at Wigan was:

09/10 - 6.7 mil
10/11 - 9.1 mil
11/12 - 8 mil
12/13 - 8.3 mil

That's not even net spend either, in all of those seasons they received more money from player sales. So let's consider some of Moyes's good defensive signings:

Lescott - 5 mil (in total)
Jagielka - 4 mil
Baines - 6 mil (in total)
Stones - 3 mil
Oviedo - 5 mil

All of which would have been a considerable amount of Wigan's budget, the most Martinez spent on a single player in his time at Wigan was 6.5 mil. Granted no-one can deny 60k Coleman is incredible but it's an outlier, even by Moyes's impressive transfer standards while at Everton.

With that said, Martinez has only signed two defenders for Everton thus far. Alcaraz which was a failure, and Galloway, while he looks a decent prospect he's still unproven so I can't really comment on that. So the jury is very much still out, but I think directly comparing signings between Everton and Wigan is somewhat unfair.

Tubes, Martinez tried to sign Stones but he came to Everton instead. You could say we acted like Chelsea in some ways.

Brennan 1 Tubes 0.

Bully tactics from Everton, and we have the cheek to be upset at Chelsea.

Holds tongue firmly in cheek*

People spend all summer listing players we should buy, but the second somebody bids for 1 of ours its an outrage, OUTRAGE, always makes me giggle.

Bobby needs to get up in the morning, ring up a journo and say the magic words, "John Stones is not for sale at any price", simple.
