John Stones transfer saga

It would be a crappy thing to do, but if we were to get players in return for Stones rather than money how does that work re:the percentage to Barnsley?

If we were to swap Stones for Zouma and Cuadrado for instance, the actual deal would have no monetary value. How would they value a cut for Barnsley or would they even not get one?

didn't Saints do sommat underhand like that to deny Bournemouth a few quid when Lallana or Big Lambo went to the RS?

I would hate us to do owt like that on Barnsley.

He dismissed them and the way they have gone about this business, he said we don't want to sell and Stones is an Everton player. Nothing else was needed.

If you think any another response would have prevented this you're only kidding yourself.
I agree. To come out and say 'we are not going to sell him' would be silly.

What if someone bid £50m?

You say we don't want to sell and you leave your options open which is sensible.

We will continue to reject bids until we get one we deem sufficient. Paper talk is just paper talk.

I dont see him as an iconic figure that deflates a club if he leaves. He just doesn't have that stature.

There is massive exaggeration over Stones, imo. It'll work Everton's way right now of course, because Chelsea will need to cough up a substantial amount given the hype around him. But Stones is far from being irreplaceable. He's looked as culpable as anyone for our poor defensive performances. He's got a long way to go and I doubt we'd get much more than mid-30 millions for him if we retained him and he improved with us for another season. His stock is way over-valued at this point and we need that cash to move in this window.

Over and above all the shoutiness, that's the way I see it.

The most sensible post on this issue yet.

Stones may or may not turn out to indeed be the Barnsley Beckanbauer but he is light years away from that at this moment in time.

He is not an "iconic" figure and the fans will not be "deflated" the way we were when Wayne left.......nor as we would have been this time last year if Ross had left us.

If he goes, he goes.

Just screw the last penny out of Chelsea.

Me? I am more excited by the prospect of Gerald working his magic again and hoping to see Rom and Ross bloom once more than I am worried about losing a raw cente half with no more than a season's worth of games under his belt.

Prithee Sir, who is this Gerald of whom ye speak ?

Stones is class, they're a rare breed footballing centre halves I've never seen a centre back of his age with such composure on the ball, and the ability to time tackles to perfection, his positioning and awareness too.
A player of the highest quality.

No but a board member or chairman could have buried the rumour to stop the drivel , and mind games from the chosen one Doug!

Do you all still love Jose now?

Always

Shame really, I've always quite liked him as the enemy of our enemy and the time he praised our support.

...but now he's just making himself look like a monumental bell, I just hope we stay classy and don't react, because the small club comment is offensive to everyone but the Sky 4, not just us.

Yep, nobody is arsed that he has bid for our player, It shows the capability we have and if anything its a compliment - its now down to Everton to use this as incentive to grow the team. Not curl up in a ball and fall under the weight of some rubles.

I disagree. Even though he's not one of our own etc, and whilst he himself is not an iconic figure, I think it will have a significant impact on the club. Other youngsters like Barkley, Browning, Galloway etc will see their future lying away from Goodison. It may seem a fruitless task for a club like Everton trying to compete with the big boys, but the only true way we can do that is by developing and retaining young talent.

And as for those who say: "take the money and just buy replacements" its just not that simple. You can't integrate players into a team that quickly. Whats the point in blooding youth players gradually through the ranks to just flog them off. Would you rather we forked out £10m for Scott Dann or recruited journeymen like Alcaraz? I'd personally prefer to develop and nurture talent, make players want to stay, to achieve something. I really do think the sale of Stones would just undermine everything, like saying whats the point?
