John Stones transfer saga

This is Mourinho's point though, I think. Everton aren't saying he is not for sale at any price, despite this pretend letter that was allegedly sent to Chelsea. If we sent a letter saying he isn't for sale at any price, then there will be no danger of him signing for Chelsea for 35 million in a few weeks time, will there? No such letter has been sent, and Everton have NOT come out and stated that he is not for sale at any price.

There is no player not for sale for any price in the World.

We don't want to sell Stones and we don't need to, Roberto and Bill will have an amount in mind that will make them sell him, I said 50M, they might say it 35M or 75M.

And a few blues shamefully trying to wind others up on the back of them too.

People conveniently ignoring two facts:

- We've sent them a letter saying he's not for sale. Just because that ballbag has ignored the letter doesn't mean we've suddenly not sent it, our stance is clear.

- We don't need to sell. Anyone quoting less than £40m clearly doesn't understand the power point one gives us. We're in the driving seat.

Neither of these two 'facts' are facts. A newspaper said we'd sent a letter, Martinez has said we don't need to sell but that has no bearing on whether or not the board would sell at a certain amount.

He had to make a response as he's was asked directly about a current media story about one of our players, what he said was perfectly adequate.

It is a game, but we're not having the rules dictated here by Mourinho and Chelsea and he's shown we won't be bullied into playing it their way.
Exactly. Also half the fume on here is because Martinez hasn't commented on sky, the hypocrisy is hilarious

Yes, but if wanted to kill the story he could have just said stuff like "It's normal that we receive interest from other clubs for our players. We take what he said as a compliment'...end of exchange.

He didn't. He indulged it and made sure the response was newsworthy and we find ourselves at this point.

No he told Chelsea that we don't appreciate how they've gone about their business, we put them in their place and showed them we won't be railroaded into doing something that only they'll gain from.

Where we find ourselves is exactly where we where before any of this was leaked by Chelsea. We have the upper hand and we'll only sell if we feel it's for the benefit of the club and not to strengthen another's clubs squad.

And guess what the sources are saying he wants to leave and we want to sell? You guessed it, newspapers as well.

Why make it easy on them and other by put a price on his head?

Because it takes away all of the crap we're seeing now..If Everton will only accept offers over 50m then negotiations should only start at that point...Everton make that clear in the press then any games played by other teams become obvious

Exactly. The only facts we know so far are that Chelsea bid 20 mill and we rejected it. Everything else is just hearsay. They haven't even come back with another bid yet.

We already have made it clear that we don't have any need to sell him, we would like to keep hold of him and he is not for sale.

Dunno what else we should have done, if Chelsea want to drag it through the papers then that's on them and not us.

Martinez was hardly definitive in his initial response. He left a baited hook in the water for Chelsea to willingly bite on.

Does anyone else suspect that kenwright is playing a blinder here, just keeping quiet, dignified, statesmanlike etc ?

Jose and Abramovic won't be used to negotiating at this level, they'll be panicking, questioning what this means, questioning themselves etc. Finally at the appropriate time, Bill will stand proud, erect, unashamed in full view of the watching world to tell them all that Everton are not a selling club, not under his watch, and that Peter Johnson is long gone.

At that point Chelsea will either fold or pay £75M to avoid utter humiliation.

If Stones does go and I don't think it will be in this transfer window, the figure will be closer to £40 million as opposed to the £20 million quoted by the Chelsea mouthpiece sky sports.

If there are people frustrated at Everton's lack of transfer activity and who also want Stones to be retained, that's a contradictory position imo.

You have to ask yourself why since day one of this transfer window and even before it opened RM has been insistent our more substantial business will be done late on in the window. The means are there for all clubs to buy players since the huge tv deal was put in place, so why is he insistent we can only do business later rather than sooner? The simple answer is that he was always going to be instructed to sell a name this summer in order to fund his incomings.

Once this bid goes above £30M (especially if it breaks the £32M record for a defender) it'll be taken and we'll finally see some movement. It's a disgrace that things are that way at a club receiving so much money, but that's the type of people we have running the club, and Lord only knows where the cash is going to. I dont think it'll be the end of the world losing Stones. He's very raw and that ball park figure would represent value for someone with limited experience and one who needs to go on a huge learning curve on the defensive side of his game at the very top level.
I agree with this - the club is happy to tick along. It appears to lack ambition, unless that ambition is to be a premier league club. We are in a different league to those with the finances to make a push at top 4. Operating with a different business model, where winning anything is highly unlikely.

Interesting point.

I've only seen it in the press. But we're told not to believe the press.

Unless it's something positive about Everton. Then we defo should.

The "letter" basically comes from an article by Chris Bascombe (the biggest raving Kopite journo of them all).

I'm taking everything without a quote with a pinch of salt
