John Stones transfer saga

you said 28 million doesnt describe a loan player or a lad on the cheap.

No it doesnt.

That describes besic, barry, lukaku (first time round), Traore, Cleverly, Deleufeu, etc

as for 28 million, we are paying in installments, not exactly turning up in london with a suitcase full of banknotes are we?

You said "The problem is martinez hasnt had money to spend yet.' WRONG
You said "First year was budget buying, loans and swapping one midfielder for the other". CORRECT
You said "Second year was signing 2 loan players, getting a lad he wanted cheap". WRONG

given that

Second year he bought Lukaku. No sane person could describe buying one player for £27/28m as 'signing 2 loan players, getting a lad he wanted cheap'.
If you had said "Second year was signing 2 loan players, getting a lad he wanted cheap and spending £27/28m on one player" you would have been correct.

The signings of Tom and Gerry were in this the third year. Not the second.

yes, but i wouldnt call signing a striker on yearly installments splashing the cash either. We are paying lukaku off over 5 years, and if his agent is to be believed we will probably be paying for him after he has long gone. So no, that isnt splashing the cash whatsoever.

and signing his loan players? i am wrong? Barry and lukaku? Besic on the cheap as well. So where am i wrong?

Everton's 2014 turnover was 120.5 mio. Operating expenses were 97 mio. Player amortisation was 18.5mio. Thus operating profit was 5mio. But EBIT was 33.3mio. The difference of 28.3mio represents profit on player sales (Fellaini, Victor and Jela) i.e the bolded part of your post is incorrect.

Sorry that's what happened when you post using your memory as opposed to having the figures in front of you

The point I have been trying to make is that if you exclude the £28 million relished from player sales then there really isn't much wriggle room in there on the basis that there weren't any significant transfer fees received in 2014/15

Just remember that whatever you think would be an acceptable fee to get for Stones, you have to factor in a certain percentage going back to Barnsley. So if you think Everton should get £30 million for him, then we'd have to sell for, say, £38 million or so if Barnsley is due 20%, for example.

This has to factor in to any potential selling price that Everton would consider. Who cares about the transfer price? All that matters what ends up in the team's pockets once all the fees are removed.

It isn't just Everton fans that think the whole Chelsea approach is a bit excessive - this is Michael Cox who often posts on the Guardian so hopefully he'll have a word with the guy who is in Montreal with Chelsea

@Zonal_Marking: Anyone know if Chelsea want to sign John Stones? I'm not sure they've made it quite clear enough in the press
@Zonal_Marking: Is Gary Cahill getting a cut of the transfer fee? http://t.co/yNd2xjHvIH
@Zonal_Marking: @Kev92Kelly @NickMiller79 I normally don't care about this kind of thing, but it's been an incredibly aggressive campaign
@Zonal_Marking: @TheEraOfEden Or they can, you know, just have some dignity and not answer https://t.co/AO77iTnh5v But I know that's too much to expect
@Zonal_Marking: @TheEraOfEden Footballers and managers spend their life not answering questions. Odd they feel compelled to now, eh? Pull the other one.
@AaronSharp: Chelsea are an absolute disgrace. This Stones pursuit is blatantly a PR orchestrated exercise in unsettling a player...
@Zonal_Marking: @AaronSharp it's an outrage. Ludicrously unprofessional
@AaronSharp: @Zonal_Marking I'm astounded at this interview in the Standard. Not one quote unrelated to Stones. It's as if he's just been unveiled.
@Zonal_Marking: @AaronSharp yeah same on Guardian website. The quotes keep going on and on and on. Never read anything like it from an English side

Everyone buys the odd dud but overall his transfer dealings were excellent. I'm not defending his ambition or lack of but it would be churlish to say that he didn't do well in the transfer market.
Agree 100%. When you consider the net spend moyes had, you can't argue with the quality he brought to the club. Cahill, lescott, jags, baines, Arteta, Coleman the list is endless of the value for money he brought to the club. How he set up those players in big games is another matter.....

Nice that others see this crazy campaign of theirs too

You can add Stones to that list. Moyes' last best gift. Jags Stones Distin Baines Lescott Coleman Neville. Moyes knew how to pick up class defenders on the cheap. He was good with the midfielders too, just never seemed to be able to get a clutch of good strikers together.

You won't find an argument with me over that conclusion.
