John Stones transfer saga

Good post that mate, I was of the 'get 40m for him and imagine who we can get' brigade initially. You are right though, why should we except that our brightest young player will go this season or any other? We have progressed massively since it happened with Rooney. Nil satis

We have progressed both on and off the field since Rooney, indeed.

Bale was mentioned earlier, the worst thing Spurs ever did was sell him. So what if they got 80mil or whatever, they couldn't replace him. They're still in the same position in the league. But with him, they might have made the next step up.

They were actually in the middle of doing that when they sold him...opps.

Paying down debt will benefit the board more than it will enhance the team.

Debateable

True if a sale was made significantly above "market value" but otherwise would be perceived negatively from a financial perspective.

Market value's a tricky one to tie down, but you might judge it as what you could reasonably expect to get for a player in any given transfer window. If at the start of this window, we'd have made it known that we'd be open to sell Stones I reckon we'd have got about 35 to 40 million

So, on a purely financial basis, it would make little sense to sell him for less than 40 million.
