John Stones transfer saga

Yep exactly! They could have built a team around him with Sky money, not Bale money.

The notion that every player has a price is crazy to me, some players are simply irreplaceable. I put Stones in that category at this stage.
This is a good point. It's easy to think "we could buy quality players for 40 million!", but it would be very difficult to attract quality players, because quality players want to play in the champions league. A player of Stones' quality won't want to come to us because there will be better teams in for him. Even if we looked to strengthen elsewhere, there's no guarantee that someone like Yarmalenko would want to come to us, or that he would play well if he did (see Soldado, etc.).

Of the players in our current squad who are champions league quality, most were rated much lower when we bought them and developed into great players (Baines, Coleman, Jagielka, Stones). Lukaku and Deulofeu already knew from their loan time here that they would fit into the system. McCarthy had worked with Martinez before. Barkley came in through the academy.

The only Champions League quality player who doesn't fit into one of those categories for me is Mirallas, and he chose us over being a fringe player at Arsenal.

It's one thing for a player to stay with a club, it's completely another for a quality player to move to a new league and risk struggling to adjust. So I agree, some players are irreplaceable.

Good to hear Martinez's official mouthpiece Nais pipe up again. He says that the 3 signings aren't remotely connected to the idea of john going. He's staying.

Really don't understand this. They are simply bidding for a player and everyone of them has a value to "their" club. If it's met and the player agrees then off he goes. Ronaldo, Torres, Suarez, Bale, Costa, Sterling, the curly haired gimp from Chelsea themselves whose name escapes me

Sideshow bob was so named because he repeatedly made a show of himself on the pitch. Assclown he was.
Chelsea need a long term Terry replacement because old racist temperament is getting on and they still need home grown quota (although there academy is knocking out heavy weights in all positions).
The problem with having world class and potentially world class players on the books is this kind of thing. Ronaldo moved as did Zidane - the days of Scholes and Shearer being so easily swayed by the promises and cash of the financial elite of there day is done.

Imagine your agent today telling you - look lad get every penny you can because in 10 years the money your on now wont even keep a 2nd division player you have to set yourself and your family up like the top earners do as quickly as you can your one injury away from being a full time gardener or working packing lasagnas on some conveyor belt take the money and be rich all your life and kids lives.

Players are human beings believe it or not and sometimes young and impressionable. Theres a world of bastards out there looking to exploit them. professional ones.

Yip... Just look at all the tosh the RS bought with the rat-faces fee...
And they were going about how they were going to sign players like Alexis Sanchez...

It makes no sense whatsoever to sell him. I said £60 million a month ago, just to start negotiating; that's how much sense it doesn't make for us as long as he doesn't want to go and he's given no outward indication he wants to. He's right where he should be, IMO. He's said in the past on interviews on the OS that he takes bad performances home with him so, really, he doesn't need the whole other side of it that comes with a price tag like that at his age.

He probably wouldn't even be getting all this attention right now if we hadn't had the guts to play him over Distin. It doesn't matter how you try to argue for or against that fact but we did it and a lot of experience was put to the the wayside for it. Now he's got a new contract and we handed him the #5 shirt. What he needs, as a professional, is all right there for him where he is now.

Now, grab the baton John and shove it right up Costa's *** when next you meet.

I think i've riled them. Honestly the debate on there has been pretty reasonable so far. But a few just don't seem to get that we don't have to sell because they (and the media) are telling us to. Honestly can't wait for that game at Goodison. It could be angry.

You certainly hit a nerve there!

I said a value to their club and the player must agree. No mind of their own? Sorry but that is their problem. Love the idea that players are in this for the shirt and not the money. The prospect of injury as you bring it up is real and obviously a factor.. Everton value the lad then give him a contract to take that worry out of the equation.

DO NOT SELL

The premier league money has made all clubs financially secure - or as good as. We don't need to sell to survive now. Chelsea/City etc can't bully clubs an longer with £ signs.

Let's see what Everton can do with stones, Barkley, lukaku etc. it might just surprise us all.

Give him a new contract now with annual pay rises to make him our highest paid player in 2-3 years as a sweetener. Show stones our commitment to him.
