This last man stuff is all rather distracting isn't it, doesn't it just boil down to whether it was a goal scoring oppo or not? It was. Just imagine how enraged we would be if our attacker was in the same position and a yellow given.

Yes, the rule is this : "denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player's goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick".

Last man has nothing to do with anything. I don't know how anyone could say he wouldn't have had the opportunity to score if he hadn't been fouled 6 yards from our goal whilst running towards it.

Im hoping this will be a 'blessing in disguise' for young John. Its not the first time he has over played the ball - he did it in the first half- and gets away with it. If he learns from this mistake and realise sometimes you have to put it in row Z, he will become a better player than he already is.

Agreed, he does this quite often, and he's skilled enough to play his way out of it usually but this was always going to happen eventually. If this had happened in a bigger game, it could have destroyed his confidence, hopefully this was the right level of wake-up call.

uefa Europa league rules someone being sent off serves a one match ban
article 22 /01

As mentioned by our esteemed fellow member @chicoazul earlier....bad news...

'Article 22
22.07 The definition of a straight red card is a sending off offence without the player prior receiving a yellow card caution. Such offences are covered in 31.04 and the tariff is an automatic three game suspension from the next game onwards.'

And it gets worse...

'For the record Premier League games don't count, different competition, so the three game ban has to be served in European competition effectively ruling out Stones until the quarter finals, should we make it.

Big blow.'

But wait, there's more...

'If we appeal it then he will automatically miss two games in the Prem Lge too lads.'

This tragedy warrants one of these...

It as Chico said way back then. we will just have to lump it.

Kithnou, you would think players know the rules! No accounting for brain fade at time is there. A really stupid cockup by Stones. Why did he not pass it back when he a chance or hoof the blessed ball into the stand. He will learn from that hopefully.

3-5 suspension weeks in the stands thinking about his stupidity should do the trick...

He was poor last night in general I thought. But tbf that's the first bad game I've seen him have so fair play.

There's been a few occasions where he's nearly got himself into trouble like that but has gotten away with it in the past. Hopefully last night serves a lesson that sometimes you just need to clear your lines John lad!!

He's been class for us but was poor last night. Like a lot of people have said, he'll learn from it. I'm just glad he did it in a game we were 4-1 up in and not 1-0 down.

Probably one of his worst games for us.

Which for all the games he's played for us isn't a bad thing.

He's still young and will learn from last night.

John Stones though.

Happily the @chicoazul Ministry of Mis-information is at work here.

The definitive position is as follows:

Article 22 Yellow and red cards

22.01 As a rule, a player who is sent off the field of play is suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment.

@chicoazul's version was much more fun...
