John Stones

I dont think the poor GK is all the story. He's just completely bad in the 18 yard box. Hopeless in the air, goes to ground at every opportunity, gives needless pens away. I mean, it's not even close his level of ability for the job required.

I don't know if you mean Howard or Stones there? I presume Howard.

He makes Stones very jittery. I remember thinking as much from the Leicester game last season (his first game back) and you could see Stones was in a rage with him and his whole demeanour changed from the previous few games. He doesn't trust Howard behind him which makes a huge difference.

Having said that I think Stones looks mentally shot to me at the moment. I think he's completely lost site of how to defend and the criticism has affected him. A spell out of the side would be ideal really.

Last season he did the simple things very well and focussed on doing them. In doing that his natural ability shone through. This season he is worrying about too many complicated things almost trying to prove he's a 50 million defender and is looking far worse for it.

He needs to go back to basics. Mark your man. When the ball is in the air go and head it. First instinct is to clear the ball, be first to the ball on tackles. Start doing that properly, confidence will grow and he can look to be more expansive again.

I am sitting here watching this again.

I have been critical about Stones for playing Howard into trouble.

I still stand by that.

To me Howard's mistake was in tackling Ayew when he was going nowhere and the ball would have went over the line.

But I will also say that Stones himself was played into trouble with that back pass....I am not sure if it was Barry or Oviedo who played it back to him.

He had a man on him and his options were limited.

John himself had headed the ball forward from a central-ish position and immediately went to cover the right back position.....a very clever thing to do.

IMO the fault lies in philosophyball......this notion that the ball must be "played out of defence" all the time.

It doesn't.

That is what Row ZZZ is for.

Stan Collymore made the point, that he should have sent that ball into the right hand channel for the centre forward. That is correct.

Stones is class but I think he needs to work on the following; 1) Those long through balls that 95% of the time get intercepted, 2) Diving in for no reason - He's done it for ages; Ighalo's goal for Watford in the first game of the season and those recent penalty calls in particular & 3) Knowing when to clear the ball.

Could I add stopping with the ball and inviting pressure on himself and also slowing everything right down

Class act with no doubt but think he needs a rest......

Stones needs someone to get a grip of him and school him in the art of defending at the top level.

That person isn't Martinez so I really hope Jagielka takes it upon himself to sort this out. I remember when Coleman was slaughtered for making mistakes in his first year at right back, important we persevere with the talent Stones obviously has.

I imagine Stones makes Howard pretty jittery too. I know it's de rigueur to lambast Howard but it swings both ways a bit here.

debate on Talksport about him now and the treatment he's getting from the Everton fans.
Feel sorry for Stones, if there was an actual goalkeeper behind him there'd be no general issue about the defence for the season in general, and that backpass yesterday would have been hoofed up the field/into touch. Martinez is crippling the defence, the team in general, and the fans by persisting with Timothy.

Baffled how anybody can pick holes in how he played yesterday, he wasnt to blame for the peno and the 2nd goal is a lucky deflection.

He wasnt at his best, nobody on the pitch, bar Gaz Baz, Geri and Besic all to briefly played well, but I didnt see anything that warrants the amount of "hate" ive read in the last 24+ hours.

Spot on, he had a bad game and getting ripped, maybe it's to do with the transfer request he put in.
