And it that very ego, although I'd prefer to call it self confidence, is one of the key things that make me think he'll genuinely make it as an excellent player. But no. He misplaced some passes and has an ego....

You can't be a panicker/second guesser and have a realistic hope of getting to the top in many positions on the pitch but it is particularly important as a CB. Being calm under pressure is crucial which means trusting yourself and being able to move on quickly from any mistakes.
Off pitch he has been praised for his charity work which is particularly unusual in one so young, he's hardly strutting around like an arrogant tit that thinks he is better than everyone else in normal life.

Naismith would make a particuarly odd choice of best friend as well.
I love Jags and think talent wise he is one of the best defenders in the league and has been for some time but if you forced me to name a weakness it would be that he can be a little too introspective and self critical. If John has a playing ego it could lead to some short term issues but long term it probably wouldn't be an issue as long as he combined it with hard work and improving the weak points in his game.
It can lead to problems, for every Ronaldo or Zlatan that combines ego/skill/hardwork there will be hundreds of Ravel Morrisons who just waste their talent, but properly used it can be a huge asset.Ego, a trait that 99% of people who excel in their field share.

I know what your saying but you just know that half the supporters who are slagging him off now probably couldn't even tie there shoelaces when
they were 21 years old. they probably still can't
But ive never anything from Stones off the pitch to suggest hes anything but a level headed lad.
He doesnt even display ego on the pitch, he just plays with confidence, which I think really worries the insecure in our fanbase.
I think you are right mate - but I think this is one of those things that us mere mortals that are out in what many would term to be the "real world" can not fully comprehend.
He could be the most level headed person in the world and be content with his lot, but even at his young age we are possibly seeing the John Stones that he is/has been coached/trained to show us. There is no telling what the likes of agents, other players or even other family members are saying or what strings they are tweaking or pulling behind the scenes - if they all want more faster and see the bright lights of Barca or Real calling then who knows - they may convince him that the smog of London or stench of Manchester are the next stepping stone.
There are many that will argue he owes Everton nothing and is unlikley to have the emotional ties or loyalty to the club as that expected (not necesasarily delivered) of the likes of Barkley (the local lad, boyhood supporter who came through our system).
Personnaly I think all the big time chat did effect him and I think it will be interesting to see how he comes back from his little rest.
Wanting to better yourself isnt about ego or a lack of anything, NOT wanting to better yourself is a worse trait.
This is more of the worry for me. He seems very level headed but there are far too many people surrounding young players who don't link the rewards of the game to going out there week after week and playing.I think you are right mate - but I think this is one of those things that us mere mortals that are out in what many would term to be the "real world" can not fully comprehend.

I'm even sure there will have been people telling him to avoid injury till a big move comes in.
Still think the club made the right stance over his deal but think in hindsight this was going to be a tough season for him.
Yep. Still trying to work out a way all three can play to be honestAnd he'll be a better player for it.
Mori doing well and I like him, but I'm very much looking forward to having Stones back with Jagielka again.

All fair enough but we're in big danger of equating ambition with guaranteed success and financial reward. Someone determined to improve and learn can also be happy enough playing somewhere that doesn't maximise either.Absolutely mate!
And no matter how we look at it, we are so far behind whoever you may term to be the "big" clubs across the country and Europe that it stands to reason that we are likely to be a mere stepping stone to bigger and better for some that grace our hallowed turf whilst others will stay and become legends and others will fail to live up to our initial expectations wherever they may end up.
To steal a line from a film I like - "Ambition is Effing critical" and if we can not offer a vehicle for these lads to realise that ambition then it stands to reason they will move on - cant knock them for that.
Personally I just ask them to give their all every time they pull on that sacred jersey and act in a manner that befits being part of the grand old team whether you are in it for the long haul or just passing through!
