John Stones

Unbelievable...

Watch back for that Villa goal. Jags completely missed the flight of the ball and Stones tries to get across on the cover. He gets outjumped by a 6'3 lump who has scored all of his goals for about the last three seasons in similar situations against grock centre halves.

There is literally no proof at all he 'thinks he's too good'. It's pure conjecture yet you state it as fact. One of the best things about Stones when he came through was his composure and all-round aura of not giving a flying [Poor language removed]. It's what makes all the best players what they are.

As a 21-year-old centre half, he came on after 5 weeks out and played in a system we had never really played before when we had already been sitting deep for about 15 minutes since we had scored the third. It was nothing more than a run out and they were already pressing us long before that and had many chances when Stones wasn't on the pitch.

Also, some quotes here from December - after the Palace game. Now, I don't think i've seen any of the people I quote below say Stones is crap now, but this is the general feel of the forum at that time. I don't see how a few iffy games and a month out suddenly changes it to 'he thinks he's better than us do la, der lad is not a defender, etc. etc.'. Of course, there's a few posters who are very adamant in that belief and at least their consistent in their opinions.

He totally doesn't want to play for us and his actual defending for the last few months has been rubbish. So let him go.

It's this type of knee jerking that is making the Everton matchday experience so unbearable for me at the moment. And that is coming from someone who has been unhappy with Stones performances and attitude for most of the season.

You do realise that Gestede is 6 foot 4 don't you and it was a cross that was perfectly placed for him to head it in?

I'm sick of our fanbase slaughtering the players for any slight mistake or when they genuinely get beaten by a good piece of play. Where has this attitude come from? I've been watching for 20 years and it's never been as bad as it is now.

Whats knee jerk about watching him deteriorate over the last few months. My guess is he doesn't want to play for us. ship him off or he'll cost us more goals.

But all players, especially young ones, go through periods of poor form and it is particularly noticeable with defenders as there is little cover behind them. Jags had an awful spell at the start of last season for instance - do you decide to sell them all when they are going through a bad patch and are conceding goals?

Or just ones that have contemplated leaving us at some point? Because both Jags and Baines have openly admitted they were tempted at certain points, not as far as handing in transfer requests admittedly, but Stones hardly pulled a Lescott/Berahino like strop despite all the Chelsea pressure, apart from the Barnsley game he was superb during the entire period.

My view is that he's a 21 year old who is an excellent player who's had a minor dip in form and because of summer incidents people are on his back. He had weaknesses but he is TWENTY ONE

What amazes me is everyone can see with some solidity in the back four we'd be in with a shot of top four. Yet loads want to accommodate a kid learning his trade in the centre of our defence. You can't have both.

yes, this is the conundrum confronting Martinez. Stones is a very talented footballer but is still green as a centre back. Funes Mori and Jagielka are a more solid CB pairing and deserve (imo) to play ahead of Stones. But Stones is a future player who I would like to remain an Everton player. I guess more judicious selection of him in the starting XI is the answer but, with his services being widely sought by other teams, I'd imagine Stones would not be content with a bit part. But Everton's immediate results comes first, ahead of a players development.
Of course I might be wrong and Stones recognises that he is not 'all that' yet and is happy to continue learning his trade with Everton. I hope this latter scenario prevails...but I'm not optimistic.

I fear losing Rom and Ross as they for me are both irreplaceable. I'm not too bothered about losing Stones providing the money is good, £45 million and I would happily see him out the door. As good as he will be im happy with Mori and a good CB signing coming in with Jags and Galloway/Browning as back ups with a wad of cash left over for a top quality goalkeeper and left sided player.

That's convinced me then!

In all seriousness, one of the things I like about the lad is he doesn't hide. He's had stick from some of the fanbase and, though we won last night which meant everyone was happy, he could easily have swerved coming over to us.

Barnsley in the cup, not long after his transfer request. Was put in the team and went out knowing he'd get some stick. Didn't play very well like, but never hid from the ball

Away at the Britannia last season when we were bloody awful and the team got booed off the pitch. Some walked off the pitch with their heads down but he had tbe guts to applaud the fans and got a decent reception.

He's not just very talented, he has the character to go with it.
