John Stones

Stones has everything, a defender needs and more, yet his one weakness I see is his ability on crosses in the air look closely the other night v Villa from a standing position he just cannot time a jump or even jump for a header Jags was also in his way - To me a perfect replacement for Jags who looks he is in his twilight years of his game Mori and Stones with a good keeper like Robles or a better keeper if Robles form dips.
Stones would never have struggled this season imo - with dithering Timmy behind him his confidence slumped, those stupid roll outs to him were ridiculous - he is still learning the game, but in the air ? he needs coaching on how to attack the ball on a cross at the moment imo!

Unbelievable...

Watch back for that Villa goal. Jags completely missed the flight of the ball and Stones tries to get across on the cover. He gets outjumped by a 6'3 lump who has scored all of his goals for about the last three seasons in similar situations against grock centre halves.

There is literally no proof at all he 'thinks he's too good'. It's pure conjecture yet you state it as fact. One of the best things about Stones when he came through was his composure and all-round aura of not giving a flying [Poor language removed]. It's what makes all the best players what they are.

As a 21-year-old centre half, he came on after 5 weeks out and played in a system we had never really played before when we had already been sitting deep for about 15 minutes since we had scored the third. It was nothing more than a run out and they were already pressing us long before that and had many chances when Stones wasn't on the pitch.

Also, some quotes here from December - after the Palace game. Now, I don't think i've seen any of the people I quote below say Stones is crap now, but this is the general feel of the forum at that time. I don't see how a few iffy games and a month out suddenly changes it to 'he thinks he's better than us do la, der lad is not a defender, etc. etc.'. Of course, there's a few posters who are very adamant in that belief and at least their consistent in their opinions.
Thanks for reminding me of my words haha! I suppose I stand by them, I think his issues right now are mental/emotional, and I think a spell on the bench behind a more traditional centre half (who hasn't been too bad offensively himself) will have done Stones a world of good. In hindsight it looks like it may have made sense to sell him, but I don't think we should knee-jerk and do it now, his price tag will be far lower than last summer, and we'll need to have 3 top-class centre halves if we have any ambition as a club.

I actually think is very good to see that Bobby dropped him swiftly after it was clear to everybody that Johns concentration was way off. It's not so far fetched to say or suggest that all the interest from City and other clubs have had an effect in him. If this is the case I think we should let him go for british record sum for a defender.
Alternatively, now that he's been given the message that he's not greater than the club, maybe he'll change his approach and work hard to fight for a place in our starting XI, giving us every reason to hold onto him.

Realistically, no premier league clubs should need to be selling clubs anymore because of the TV money, unless players want out.

Y'all need to get right off the lads back.

It sickens me everytime I open this thread.

We have a talented young lad whos having a rough time adapting to the pressure of modern football.

Instead of supporting him and helping him through it some of you only seek to plunge the knife in deeper and accuse of him being a big time charlie cos the lad had the confidence to take the piss in the penalty area. Ive seen nothing from John Stones to indicate hes nothing but a level headed lad that was badly advised in the Summer and never once opened his mouth demanding a move or bad mouthed the club once.

Ashamed to support the same club as some of you, really I am.

I hope he gets the message

This could well work in our favour..as personally I think if he'd have continued in the same vein as earlier in the season he'd have been a cert to be sold. The past couple of months may have put doubts in the minds of a few clubs...and we certainly wouldn't need to sell on the cheap...hence, he stays.
Best result for me..as, unlike some on here, I still think he's a big part of the future of this club

dropped he had a hamstring strain?

You're right, wrong choice of words. Was referring to the fact that he wasn't allowed to walk straight back into the team once he was fit.

Martinez is often criticized for persisting with his favorites over players who are in form, he should have credit for choosing to persist with Funes-Mori

He has a fantastic skill set but lacks the experience that comes for a centre back after 3/4 seasons of football. I don't think he'll be here for us to see the best of him.

Yeah i agree think he will be gone come the summer.
