John Stones

Not very well of late...liability

Eh?

He's played 15 mins against Villa (where we conceded) - his first game in over a month.

He then started against West Ham in a 3 man defence and played fine. He was taken off as a consequence of Kev's stupidity. We didn't concede when he was on the pitch.

Came on vs Chelsea, looked fine.

Came on vs Arsenal. One miss-hit clearance other than that was probably our best player (not saying much) and the only one looking to drive forward.

You're talking nonsense.

He lost his place for a reason.

He lost his place for a reason.

He lost his place because of a hamstring injury, which came after one or two iffy moments (literally, that was it, this whole 'he's out of form' thing is totally nonsense).

He came back and Jags and Mori were in good form.

Both Jags and Mori were awful on Saturday and before that vs W.Ham Mori had a bit of a shocker as well.

So, Stones now - rightly - has the chance to regain his place and he'll only do that by playing well.

Agreed, Stones is quality and a lot of people seem to ignore 90 minutes of football that he's done well in, for that one minute where he 'almost' overplays the ball. Just so they can sit back and swear about how stupid it is to play football on a football pitch when you have a football and are a pro footballer.
Calls for hit it to row z are daft, our issues come when we don't have the ball, not when Stones does.. its stopping crosses and closing down shots, or free kicks and corners or even 30 yard lumped balls that we are constantly 2nd to that cause our downfall, and that's all our defenders and our midfield not just Stones, he makes few mistakes when he has the ball but often uses his quality to get us moving, changing us from the back foot to the front foot and personally I love it.
It's not down to Stones playing too much football that costs us all these points, that part of our defence is actually ace, not many players have a CB I actually enjoy watching play, its that as a group we just don't defend very well.. And I am fairly sure this is down to the system we play.

Nobody played well on Saturday - but Stones wern't as bad as anyone else...And - don't forget - he got away with that looping backpass that barely reached Robles...

As I mentioned mate, bar that clearance/back pass, he had a fine game - which by our standards on Saturday made him Man of the match

So Martinez says he'll turn our season around? What's he going to do, gift Martial a goal by trying to be fancy in the box?

We've suffered decades of brainfarting defenders and goofy goalies, it's little wonder the crowd get antsy when Stones does his trademark fannying inches from goal. Doesn't have to be Row Z every time, but he needs to know when to do so. His keepball approach is high risk; mess it up and the result can be very bad.

Yeah but in a few seasons of football how many times has he cost us a goal playing 'fannying' about 1? 2?
How many has playing out led to? Probably more.

But its the effect of having a defender rip some of the big names with his skills for me that I like.

His taking the p out of United, Chelsea and Arsenal strikers used to lift the crowd, and I'm sure if you were a young Everton midfielder and you had doubt about being able to beat the likes of Hazard with a bit of skill, watching your CB do it has to give you a bit of a mental boost too, okay if a kid in CB can do this, what the hell am I worrying about?

I'm happy for him to keep doing it till it starts to be detrimental, its far from that at current, sadly even our own fans don't see it anymore.

it's quite possible that Stones' drop in form has been for the same reason as the relative drop in form of the other defenders.

that is, because the manager does not coach the defence to keep their shape and position so they all look rubbish.

Get a manager that understands defending and John, Funes and the rest will prosper and look the quality they really are.

Joel might even turn out to be excellent too under an appropriate manager

The fans EXPECT it to lead to a mishap and get shirty about it. That's my point. I know it has actually only resulted in a couple (still too many imo) but it causes anxiety all around the ground. No-one needs those bad vibes.

Its sad they can't man up and have faith in a defender who has proven over and over again his quality on the ball. Not once have I felt he was gonna lose the ball, the couple of times he had have been a surprise, what hasn't been are the hundreds of times he's run out with the ball, and you know what, he is a genuine entertainer.

If you don't find holding your breath, as he plays his way out fun, whilst being dazzled by his quick footwork then yeah I would understand the frustration, but as much as I rated Moyes, I prefer the way Stones plays to the way we used to play from the back.

ps.. its only some fans
