John Stones

Its sad they can't man up and have faith in a defender who has proven over and over again his quality on the ball. Not once have I felt he was gonna lose the ball, the couple of times he had have been a surprise, what hasn't been are the hundreds of times he's run out with the ball, and you know what, he is a genuine entertainer.

If you don't find holding your breath, as he plays his way out fun, whilst being dazzled by his quick footwork then yeah I would understand the frustration, but as much as I rated Moyes, I prefer the way Stones plays to the way we used to play from the back.

ps.. its only some fans
The problem (for this fan) is he has one way, and one way only. Very much a product of Martinez in that sense. Realising when to stick it into touch would be a smart thing for Stones to learn.

That's the trick though isn't it? If he hits it into touch when its dangerous, it will be 90% of when he gets the ball because he is a CB, we would lose everything that makes him so uniquely quality.

No, I'm not suggesting he spank it into Row Z all the time. But there have been many, many examples of where he should have, but didn't.

Just a bit more balance in his play, that's all I ask.

He's a class act this lad. He hasn't looked quite the same since the whole Chelsea fiasco, his attitude seems to have changed, and at times I think he risks believing his own hype too much. But, on the pitch when he puts his mind to it, there are very few better young central defenders in Europe.

Winning heaps of trophies and being a regular England player? Not a bad path like.

Hasn't played for his country in 4 years, getting relegated with his boyhood club whilst being absolutely despised by its fans.

He's earned plenty of cash and has a couple of trophies in his cabinet but never performed at a level even close to what he did at Everton after he left. It all depends on how you judge a career, I guess.

Whether you like or dislike RM, he has done the right thing by taking him out of the team.
I would expect to see him back in the starting XI after this international break though, alongside Jags.

People seem to forget that Stones' worst games were alongside a Funes Mori who was only finding his feet. Alongside Jags he was much better. Also, having the worst keeper in the top 2 divisions in England behind him, who for the last 18 months has been more error prone than Paul Gerrard didn't help.

We badly need, not just a top-class keeper, but a keeper who is also a leader and will marshal the defence, because Jags, Baines, Coleman, Stones & Mori are just not up to that task IMO. Think Oliver Kahn/Schmeichel as them roaring at the back 4 if they were out of position. Stones will be the best English CB of his generation, I have no doubt.

More more caps than many of our players, and more trophies than any of our players. I'd judge that a success.

I really can't understand all this stuff about Stones being a bad player. When Chelsea were trying to buy him he was irreplaceable, he was the essence of our club, if we sold him it would mark us out as a selling club etc etc. He goes off the boil and now he is a poor footballer.
He is a young man who has had a lot to cope with over the last short while. I hope whoever is in charge of Everton come the summer has a bit of send a and allows the lad the opportunity to sort himself out and get back to the level he was at.

...I think he's tremendous but in hindsight the decision not to sell him appears to have done no favours to all concerned. I heard Danny Murphy on radio this week saying he should be a definite starter at the Euro's as England's best CB.

In my book he should be given more game time now in preparation for Jags going and we having a strong young CB partnership for the future.

A Roberto Martinez, Ian Halloway, Kevin Keegan side is always going to concede, lots.

He sets up to score goals, not defend. He's open about that;

Clean sheets develop confidence and form for 'keepers and defenders..

It's a little wonder our defenders and goalkeepers form have gone to the dogs.

Stones' is also told to play in possession, it's his responsibility to connect defence to attack. He's briefed to play that way, then fans get on his back for dwelling on the ball/playing as he's no doubt told to.
Clean sheets are what defenders and keepers take pride in. They are the defenders' version of goals.
