John Stones

Does anybody think that he is any chance of staying?

Actually he has a much better chance of staying than he did last summer, when every Evertonian and their dog predicted that he'd be on his way.

Everton now have the money to increase his wages and to offer him more chances of realising his ambitions at Goodison.

His market value has increased significantly from what it was last summer. And there can be very few clubs in the world who can afford to pay something close to a world record fee for a defender who would represent a certain amount of risk, given his style of play and his lack of Champions League experience.

I think much depends on what happens in the summer, the same with Rom.

Historically, we don't tend to lose two gems in one summer window. It would be strange to have both Rom and Stones when we are supposed to be on the cusp of something big.

There feeling around the club has been very positive since Moshiri arrived, we are now able to compete. Two major players leaving in the summer wouldn't really fit with all of that promise. He said he wants to keep the best players at the club.

But something clearly needs to be done to convince them that Everton is a club that is going places, I'm not sure vague references in the Echo to £150 million being available will cut it.

Moshiri has purchased a 49.9% stake at Goodison to become the club’s biggest single shareholder and has vowed to provide funds in the transfer market.

Roberto Martinez has spoken about the Blues being able to work in an “expanded” area for signings this summer but has yet to sit down with Moshiri and finalise his targets and budget.

Some estimates says Martinez could be given as much as £150m to play with.

Sweet Lord. Has anyone spent that much in one offseason?
Surely not.

It's crazy money and personally I can't see Everton spending that much.

I was talking to my kopite mate about it last night. He was adamant that Moshiri would not put in 10% of his wealth into transfers this summer. He is probably right but it's fun seeing them rattled.

I am confident that we will have very decent money to spend. The one thing I was looking forward to most was the end of "Everton can't afford to turn down that kind of money", "Everton can't keep hold of him". We all saw how the club was able to stay strong last summer over Stones. With added financial clout, you would only hope that our hand is further strengthened.

Seems unlikely.

Never mind transfer kitty's get Stones playing RM, that is what is needed. Try him in front of back four, what have we lose, formatio could be like 4-1-2 etc.

...I think he's tremendous but in hindsight the decision not to sell him appears to have done no favours to all concerned. I heard Danny Murphy on radio this week saying he should be a definite starter at the Euro's as England's best CB.
Tbh as far as Stones is concerned think moving to Chelsea would have been even worse for him as an individual - there isn't anything he could really have done to have altered their dreadful form at the start of the year and he would most likely have shouldered a lot of the blame, and for a wider audience, than he did for our weaknesses at the back.

If he wants to leave, try and persuade him to stay but get the best possible price otherwise.

Don't see why people are so willing to let him go. He's going to be the best CB in the world. A couple of mistakes doesn't change that. They weren't even mistakes. The turns in the box did not result in us losing the ball and had the bellends in the Gwladys not get on his back he'd have played it out better. He'd have a lot more confidence than he does now, leading to even fewer mistakes.

I'd rather we kept our best talents and got shut of players like Gibson etc

Roy Hodgson has warned John Stones that he needs to “cut out” the mistakes that have cost him his starting place at Everton in recent weeks and put in doubt his prospects of being in the England team for Euro 2016.

Stones will start alongside club team-mate Phil Jagielka against Holland, winning his eighth cap, on Tuesday at Wembley Stadium as the England manager plans to field a completely different line-up to the one that achieved such an impressive 3-2 friendly victory away to Germany on Saturday.

At the start of this season Stones and Chris Smalling were being touted as England’s most likely first-choice central defence pairing at the finals in France but that has been questioned given the form of the 21-year-old and, also, the way he has been handled by Everton manager Roberto Martínez.

Indeed Stones has not played 90 minutes for Everton since Jan 24 and has either been a substitute, or been substituted, in a struggling side with the fit-again Jagielka partnering Ramiro Funes Mori in central defence.

“We believe in John Stones. He will get a chance on Tuesday,” Hodgson said. “We think he is the type of centre-half who can be good for England going forward but to use him he has to play well enough to break into his club side as his first task. Then he has to be so good with us that we consider moving the two we had [against Germany – Chris Smalling and Gary Cahill] and Phil Jagielka. He is a very talented player. We need to keep encouraging him.”

Given Hodgson’s avowed bold approach it would appear logical that Stones has a very good opportunity of forcing his way into the team with his ball-playing ability. He is far more comfortable in possession than any other England central defender.

Stones was courted by Chelsea last summer, but remained at Everton
Hodgson has also spoken about considering Stones in the holding midfield role although Eric Dier appears to have impressively staked his claim to that position.

Hodgson will make the wholesale changes he promised for the game against Holland with the big question mark being who will play at left-back. After the withdrawal of Ryan Bertrand, Hodgson has only Danny Rose in his squad and although the Tottenham Hotspur defender, who made his debut against Germany, may start against the Dutch, he is unlikely to play more than 45 minutes. If he does that may not go down too well with Spurs. Hodgson is, therefore, considering calling up another left-back. It appears England will continue with the 4-3-3 formation, that can be changed to a 4-4-2 with a midfield diamond. “We like both systems,” Hodgson said.

I'm not english, but I understand why many people love him both at Everton & at a national level.

He appears arrogant, but he has vision & skill to back it up. I don't see him being loyal to Everton at all.

Cash in & spread the wealth for hungrier talent.

What does that mean? Who is loyal to Everton..particularly when that Everton is a basket case that can't provide what your talent as a player deserves?
This applies to all top players at our club, and all clubs.

I like Roy's comments - enough positive statements to give Stones encouragement while pointing out how he can improve.

could it be that Roy is better at managing Stones' and Barkley's talent than Roberto is?
