John Stones

Oh, and he was naive/silly to react to the Goodison angst/anxiety with his "calm down" antics.

It prompted the media to latch on to that moment and his tendency (instruction) to dwell on the ball and that spotlight hasn't shifted.

I also think a segment of our fan base are still fuming at him for his JUDAS antics.

His head has been elsewhere for me all season. Fully expecting a transfer request to be lodged asap after the season ends.
Damn shame.

Roberto made him and Roberto will sell him on. It's only fair.

I wish you'd listened to me two years ago when I said straight off the bat he was a CM all day long...and last summer when I said sell, sell, sell. We wont get approaching £40M now for that mess.

And £40m wouldn't have done anything for us. We'd still be bottom half most probably.

I'd rather he stayed and played his way back into form, as he's class.

His issue isn't playing from the back, the issue is the area's he is trying to build from. What he did tonight is no different than what he has done for us over the last 6-12 months its just getting more scrutiny as it was on the national level. He seemed to learn after the mistakes today and improved as the game went on but he has a bad habit of in general not learning from the mistake long term.

These mistakes continue to happen from overplaying in bad situations. The Janssen one was pure stupidity, he had no easy pass and was the last man, just go to the GK and recycle play don't try and over complicate it and end up slipping over leaving what should have been a goal.

His pass for the first goal and the pass to Walcott where ideal examples of the correct areas to play, we or whoever he ends up with have to hope he will start learning from his mistakes much like other defenders have over the years e.g pique, hummels, ferdinand, lucio etc....

I still don't think Martinez is the right man to get these mistakes out of his game though, he encourages it too much and more needs to be done on telling him when in danger forget trying to build an attack just focus on getting the team reset and then building when situation is more suited.

Stones was mostly good tonight on the ball. What we still aren't seeing though is the reading of the game and the brilliant tackles with those long Inspector Gadget legs that we used to see for Everton. He's always been good on the ball but it was that coupled with his defending that made him a class act. He needs to get back to that as he doesn't look switched on at times now.

He's only 21 mate. It will come.

You're right......get Unsworth in and teach the lad how to launch it Jagielka-style....but issue safety headwear to people in the Paddock and the family enclosure who'll be in his firing line.

Much rather have a 'smash it up field lad' player than a cultured footballer.
I love how there can only be two types of defender.

1. 'smash it up field lad'
2. Cultured footballer

Absolutely no room for a cultured defender to know when it's time to smash it up field, eh?

Spot on, he needs an arm round his shoulder telling him how boss he is, without forgetting to coach the errors out of him.
Whether that happens here, or somewhere else, he's almost guaranteed to be one of the top defenders in Europe.

But that's unfortunately what really gets me down about the whole thing. He is clearly boss and has all the ability in the world, but our current set up and the terrible defensive management our team is under just mean that he isn't learning the art of defence.

Yes his passing is superb. Yes he is technically very good. But he's a shadow of what he was two seasons ago. And how on earth has that happenned? He's going to be absolutely boss and one of the best there is but of course it won't be for us. That's what is so sad about the situation.

Oh how I miss these....

Think you can see it in his body language, stones probably for the first time in his career is struggling for confidence. Whereas you quite rightly pointed out, up until this season he used to cruise through games. Great reading and anticipation to sense danger. Sadly what we are seeing is not the john stones we all know and admire. But as the saying goes form is temporary and class is permanent. I have no doubt stones will come through this and become an even better player. I just hope that is with us.

This is the tragedy that is our defence. We have coleman , Baines , Mori , jags and stones. All class acts and wanted by other clubs all the time but we leak stupid goals. There is only one person to blame here !
