John Stones

Every player is capable of moments of brilliance. Christ, even Sakho made some world class tackles the other night. It's what you do aside from these great moments, the bread-and-butter stuff, that is just as important. And as far as I'm concerned, Stones does not cut it. Nowhere near enough. He gets flagged up in almost every single game as being responsible for something, be it failing to defend a cross, being out of position, dangerous passes in dangerous areas, or reckless last ditch tackles.

I just don't rate him at all.

So true mate we actually made Sakho look world class lol

You saw how god damn amazing he was for the first half of the season, he was sensational at times... Looked better than ever. This is backed up by reading the threads about him on other football forums where rival fans were gushing over him during this period of time.

He's just hit a horrible run of form like the entire club and its magnified ten fold due to him being a defender in a team with a manager whose seemingly forgotten how to coach defending.

If he has someone like Jose managing him I fully expect him to live up to the initial hype.

By and large, the praise for Stones centred around his swanning runs out of defence (which are indeed very nice, and just adds weight to the argument that he's a defensive midfielder, not a defender). Not a great deal was said about his actual defending abilities.

A poor run of form does not excuse failing to jump for a header.

Stones is a young footballer learning to become a defender. He has undoubted natural gifts as a footballer but defending is a skill that has to be taught and nurtured, with development coming through desire, experience and good coaching. I doubt he sees any of the latter at Everton. An Arsenal fan at work asked me yesterday morning after the derby debacle who was Everton's defensive coach (a la Steve Bould at Arsenal)......."er..." I replied!

You don't get to play in the premiership if you're no good. I'm not denying he is of a suitable quality to be a prem player.

It's the hyperbole that does my head in. 'The new Beckenbauer' 'going to be the greatest English CB of all time' etc. Give me a break.

I like Funes can't believe the fuss over the mis-timed tackle and the badge kissing, he never gives less than 100%, not many are doing that at the moment.

Suarez did it to us every derby! Gerrard has done it multiple times SO I'm not complaining about Funes' tackle. We owed them.

Best player out there for us today. He led the change in the game by leading with the ball and showing a willingness to move forward in possession. Think he deserves a bump to the first page. Well played given all his recent criticism in the media.

Was Gibbo off for treatment when Martial scored? Saw Stones trying to track back but having to attack and defend constantly must have been a nightmare.

Really good, especially that 2nd half.

Looked sublime when stepping into midfield, could be a top defensive mid if not for being a cb
