John Stones

Boo-chuffing-hoo. He got skinned like a cat, then flailed with a last-ditch tackle that was miles off.

He's a central defender. It's his job to be the last man. It's his job to know what to do when isolated, as it's the CL and the other side might be quite good.
The same thing people were saying when we battered them 4-0. Everyone else but John.

Yeah sort of true and I guess this is the stones thread so deficiencies of the other players aren't that relevant, but it was just a point he's not totally to blame.

Otamemdi was far worse tonight and has been all season yet Stones gets all the stick from the bandwagon jumpers.

First one was his fault too. He starts to step up before the cross comes in - vacating that space where the cross ends up being whipped across for the header. His co-ordination with the team mates around him is non-existent.

That's a little bit harsh even for this thread!

Ok, just seen the first Falcao goal. You can see he doesn't know what to do. He starts towards marking Falcao and then takes a step out towards the midfielder on the ball before it gets crossed and leaves Falcao to be picked up behind him by Sagna. That's poor from him.

Second one is all Otamendi, PMSL at him trying to give Caballero grief over that goal, was far too easy for Mbappe

For the third one he isn't quick or strong enough to keep Falcao from getting to the long ball over the top and he gets done far too easily and ends up on his arse.

We bagged 50 million quid for a guy who essentially can't do the fundamentals of a defensive role.

He's ace on the ball and looks fancy but I've never seen a centre back who's hyped up as much as him make so many mistakes and so many of the same mistakes. He's been doing it consistently since he's been in the Prem, and he doesn't seem to be learning from his mistakes.

The whole defensive unit at city doesn't work, not just stones. peps made stinker dropping Hart as he was probably the one leader at the back they had. Cabellero is a joke of a keeper, doesn't have any presence at all, gives the ball away regularly and he's not even a decent stopper. Otamendi is just as prone to making mistakes as Stones but he also gives the ball away more frequently. Hilarious to watch.

Got to say though, the worst bit of defending on show is Aguero's volley from the corner. That was criminal, no attempt to even get close enough to put him off the shot never even mind a challenge for the ball in the air. Aguero gets to pick his spot in the opposite corner and there's not a single player in front of him and the goal besides the keeper when he shoots, from a corner. I'd murder my pub league team for that.

Think he's the type of player who needs a very good defender and a leader next to him. Pique learned to defend better playing next to Puyol. David Luiz always looked a lot better next to Thiago Silva and has got better for playing with him.

These players are necessary to do and show how to do the dirty work next to your classy looking ball playing defenders.

The problem for Stones is that he's got Otamendi who, as pointed out, makes just as many mistakes as John.
