John Stones

For all Stones little cheeky nutmegs and relative comfort on the ball, he is far off being a top class defender in the class of Terry in his prime - and we need that now. Tony Adams was skipper of the Arse at 21 for all his flaws off the pitch, Stones is now where near the defender he was ...yet.
Will he get the coaching at Everton?
The same Adams who was all over the place at the 88 euros
And basically destroyed by the press and I don't think he was an England regular again until about 93/94 when he was probably 26/27?
Also the arsenal team that won the title in 89 and 91 under graham was very defensive and played 3 CB's. One of them being o'Leary who must have been about 35

Come on mate he was pulled all over the shop by in the Holland (crunch) game by Van basten and Gullit who went on to lift the trophy - my point is that Stones is not at the same point defensively as Adams was at same age.

Crunch game?
England lost all 3 I think Russia put 3 goals past them
In italia 90 butcher walker & Wright whet the 3CB's
If he was that good he would easily got in for one of them 3
I'm not saying stones is fantastic at defending and still has a lot to learn
But it's so easy to say this player was great and that player was better at the same age
When in reality most people think of Adams in his prime

In 25yrs people won't remember the odd mistake stones made at 21

He was probably in the nick for DD in 90. - 88 was too much too soon for him it seems. But does this not support that if the coaching at efc is not going to make him better defensively, cash in and re invest.

I think Stones needs a monster next to him.

Jagielka is a solid player and Mori "may" become that player in time but needs a fair bit of improvement.

Have to say, looking at Bonucci (Stones) and Chiellini (Jagielka) i think Shawcross would be the best match in the league and hes only 28. Would cost too much off Stoke i think though.

Hard to know what to do here for Stones partner aa Jags isnt getting any younger, Mori we will only really see next season and Galloway needs a year longer i think.

When England got humped by Germany 4-1, not one that defence get blamed for that, JUST Gareth Barry.

But When England get beat by Uruguay and Italy, the defenders get blamed.....tin foil hat.....!

We haven't played with two defensive midfielders for a couple of months now.
whether we play with 1 or 2 holding is irrelevant because one or both of them get sucked into the attacking third joining in with the forwards instead of sitting in and shielding their back four.

Stones will be a great centre half but not with martinez as manager.
He needs a manager that understands how to defend
I think you may need to rethink that post.
Without RM it is questionable if Stones would be regarded as one of the best young defensive prospects in world Football.

I don't think that would be the case if he was weak at defending.

He is the most complete centre back I have seen since the great Bobby Moore - yet he needs to work on his aerial ability in every aspect of defending long balls set pieces - corners - I watch out for him on these points I list , and he his upper body strength he needs to bully players more in the air to win headers - He is the hottest defender England has ever produced since the great Bobby Moore he is so talented he could play in front of two centre halfs and go forwards even more - the best of him is yet to come he is just so cool and brilliant!
