2018/19 Jonjoe Kenny

I still feel that way, the snag is that we dont have a left back to come in for Digne once Baines leaves.

Also its obtuse that Coleman came straight back in for Kenny which i feel was unwarranted.

So, my logic would be;

A-- Sign a left back who knows theyre behind Digne --who likely is our long term first choice -- who wont get many games at all and so probably wont be that good.

B-- Sign someone who can play both sides who has a higher chance for game time enabling us to loan Kenny out to develop.

I would choose B as it enables us to sign a superior player (in theory) and also gives Kenny games.

Do you feel that Kenny / Holgate would benefit more from being part of the squad and not playing or going on loan?

Thats really what it comes down to...

..Silva says he wants competition for places, surely we want players who provide continuity when we have injuries. Right backs are totally different to left backs, I can’t see the logic of getting a single back up for both. The strategy should always be to get better than we have.

Bottom line is that Jonjoe is not only back up but the only experienced right back apart from Coleman , without him we’d be left with playing a Centre Back or midfielder there if Coleman was injured. Our lack of right back cover was illustrated when we brought on 17 year old Kyle John at right back in that Gor Mahia game.

I agree with the sentiment "get better than we have", so bearing in mind Coleman hasnt been at his previous level...if he doesnt improve over the season would you sign a starter and then who would you keep Coleman or Kenny?

At left back, once Baines is off in summer would you then upgrade on Digne (very difficult) or how would you add a 2nd left back?

At United Pip Neville played both sides as a utility player...Connolly doesnt look like he will progress to the level we need...but theyre the type of utility man every top side has...ive mused about Tierney who plays each side for club and country.

I really like Kenny but think he could do with games if hes not getting a chance to develop...so this way it kills 3 birds (RB/LB + kenny loan) with one stone.

If we could get an experienced older right back in on either a 6 or 18 month contract we could loan Kenny out somewhere to get him regular games. The problem with this is essentially your bringing someone in to be a back up from the start and not many players would be happy with this. Also quality of player is not going to be the best either unless you throw a lot of wages at it. I kind of like the idea of one back up for both full back positions but these players are few and far between and again if they are any good would want to be a regular starter.

...Silva wants competion for every position, so the aim is to get competition. It really is down to his and Brands opinion. They have Coleman/Kenny as RB, they need to determine if they are content with that or bring in better.

LB is a bit different with Baines contract up, they need to decide an alternative or a new contract.

The other consideration is whether they feel any of the youngsters are ready to step up.

Thats what I mean, if (as looks increasingly likely) they cant promote a left back and Baines leaves then we will need to bring one in.

Young promising left backs wont want to be stuck behind Digne...good ones the same...as they will all want game time.

So it would appear that its an older stopgap signing or someone whose content to be a sub (so likely of a lower standard).

If thats the case id prefer we went for a utility player who could get games in other positions too...more attractive for the level of player we need.

I like Kenny and was thinking he would make the position a fight this season...that could still happen but doesnt look like he will get many games.

..young promising LBs will be delighted to get a Premier League contract at Everton to be Digne’s back-up. The lads in the Academy would die to be in that position as will most young players. A professional contract at Everton will make them wealthy, two professional contracts makes them millionaires.

Surely its not only about the money though, they'd want to see they have a chance to make the team?

Or getting Martina back.

A good young player who for the next season at least should serve as a capable backup to Coleman. After that then guess it depends on how he develops and if Coleman is playing at the required standard we hopefully are as a team.

A lot depends on how Silva develops him.
He's in an ideal position at his age.
He can learn a lot from Seamus and Silva while working out what his game is.
If Silva can get him on the pitch as much as possible, gives him the confidence, he's got the skills and attitude to make it.

Coco can cover both sides equally as crap as each other
