Well Davies had broken into the side last season and played most of pre season so yeah I think a lot of people were actually quite surprised it took so long to get him in to the team.

Of course training is different, but the point I'm trying to make is we have to trust professionals to make a judgement on whether or not someone has what it takes. They're not infallible by any means, but I always find the idea that "we'll never know unless we pitch them in" a bit daft. I mean, I was a decent player as a kid but I've never been given a first team game at Everton either. Somewhere along the line it was decided I didn't have what it takes, and the same will happen to 99% of kids coming through. We don't get to have a vote as fans as to which players deserve a run out and which don't.

If Kenny, Pennington, Dowell, Williams etc are going to be good enough to be regulars in a top 4 team then I'm all for getting them in the team. If they're going to be championship/league one standard like many who've gone before them then I really couldn't care less if they play a handful of games for us or not.

I kind of get this logic, but it is very difficult to tell until they are given a chance in a match situation. They are also unlikely to ever get to the required standard without game time. Lets put it this way, Davies was no further along last season than Kenny is now. He looked good for the 23's but never stood out above the others. The way he strode onto the pitch last year against Southampton though showed he was ready to take it into his stride. He's had close to 25 games since then, which will do him the world of good.

We will have to be ruthless. I have no issue with that> All I've asked though, is that they are not kept out of the team by average players. I'd be gutted if we signed Martina which kept Kenny out of the team (or pushed him down the pecking order). Likewise, I'd rather see Dowell than the likes of Lennon or Kone who we know aren't good enough and never will be. OR Davies ahead of Cleverly.

It's a hard balance though. Look at the stick Calvert Lewin is currently getting and you can see why we are reluctant to throw lads in.

Yeah I agree with your general point.

I think Davies kind of proves the point I was trying to make. As you say, he wasn't necessarily a stand out performer for the under 23s, but there was a reason why he was given his debut at 17 while other, older, players haven't been. The manager and coaches saw something in him. His performance in that game might have catapulted him into our thoughts, but the coaches had obviously already recognised he was the real deal. DCL is evidently the same, we might not see why but it's clear he's very highly rated. If the staff don't believe another player will make, history says it's highly likely they're right.

Kenny has to be the understudy for me. Felt we needed one a couple seasons back but for whatever reason it didn't happen. Kenny is of age now he can slot in. Save your money Koeman for where we really short.

Impressed me there tonight. Very attack minded and quite good in the air for his size and stature. Got in behind the defence numerous times but for me he floats his crosses too much when drilling them seemed the better option.

Definitely deserves a proper chance in the first team but it looks like the England U20 call up is going to hinder that.

He's off to S Korea with 4 other Everton players for the U20 World cup.

Steve Walsh, Everton’s Director of Football, said the Blues have given the players permission to travel with England despite the first-team squad still having to play Arsenal in their final game of the campaign on 21 May.

Presuming that means they are all still here on Friday. Doesn't say on the link.
