The problem is you could have De Gea and Van Dijk at the back but with a shaky system and manager unable to defend adequately you'll always be shaky at the back.

Look at how quickly Howard, Jags, Baines and Distin all declined defensively from Moyes to Martinez. No question in my mind the manager plays a big part on how comfortable those at the back are.

Which makes it all the more puzzling why the defence went to hell in a handcart under Koeman.

Well it's been a massive improvement from last year. Still doesn't change the fact that Keane isn't very good. That Coleman can't defend.

I think last season we had absolute dross back there

Kenny Keane Williams Martina

Thats a championship back line right there.

Coleman Keane Zouma Digne

We should be defending much better with our current options so for me the buck stops with Mr Silva.

He and Baines never seem that commited to stopping crosses Digne has been a big improvement in that department.

You'd have thought someone who'd been a top defender could have drilled an effective defence.but then maybe it was like expecting Leonardo da Vinci to work with plasticine

Vitruvian Man could have been so different.

Exactly, Koeman was one of the greatest defenders to ever play the game as a player yet as a manager we were shocking at the back, even last season under the gravylord, defending is his bread and butter (with extra gravy of course) and we were still not great at it, a little better but not much. Shows how bad some of the players are imo.

Happened ALL the time under Moyes. Baines has always stood off wingers - usually turning his back on any cross from about 5 yards away.

It’s certainly never been a strength of his. Under Martinez I noticed neither backs never moved to stop a cross and they took up the position to stop being beaten via a run. That said to me it was policy.

Either way, it needs drumming out of whoever is playing there. We need to try everything to keep the ball out of our box.
