I listened to Southall on the Carragher podcast the other day. He said he wasn't surprised when he made the saves he did in the game, because it was his job and he practiced it religiously in training and if he could do it in training why not in a match?

Likewise I watched a Kevin Peitersen documentary. In the nets before a match he'd have bowlers bowling off 16 yards to him. His view was training should be harder than the match and if you were ok in training the match would be fine. He wouldn't stop training until he was happy.

I know Mayweather does similar too in boxing terms. 4-5 minutes rounds with 3 different people subbing in for 15 rounds.

The broader point is, if you don't work hard you won't get to the top. All PL footballers are elite level really, they all work hard and the differences between them are then very small. There's no doubt Pickford works hard, but the question is, is getting drunk at the darts consistent with the very top performers in the league?

Pickford does have unique ability. The numbers I put up earlier, of save to shot ratio, at Sunderland, as a 22-23 year old, in a hopeless cause were fantastic. If he had the same ratio this season we'd have conceded just 23 goals. He should be really disappointed he's not at that level at least.

I'm not quite sure he really wants it enough yet. I liked that he called his mistake disgusting. Thats good. But how are you going to react to it Jordan?

That's the frustrating part. We can all clearly see he has talent but the mental lapses in his game have become all too frequent. It's hard to tell exactly what the issue is, but at times it seems like his concentration isn't the best. As if he's not concentrating on actually thinking through what he's doing.

Needs to grow up.

The one he made at 2-1 was outstanding. So there has to be some nuance to the discussion.

To be honest kudos for making himself big but at the end of the day it was a bad miss by Benteke who put it right at Pickford.

It was a lucky save.

It's not about hating Pickford, it's things he must improve on...

Saves on the left hand side, he has a weakness there that needs to improve....

Commanding the six yard box, claiming crosses etc.....

Staying calm & not spreading panic through the whole defence....

Cut out the drama saves & just be a good solid keeper....

Stop rushing out needlessly, let the defenders do their job....

I'm sending Pickfords head isnt quite in the right place. He keeps saying stuff that he probably shouldn't, that keep coming back to bite him. Going back to the 'I wont make blunders' comment as well as this latest 'everyone hates me because I'm Englands no.1'.

He doesnt seem to get that his inconsistency is frustrating people. Not sure why he cant see that.

He needs to knuckle down and focus...but I doubt he will.

Dont think that will happen anyway, Southgate knows he is reliable for England,they may swap him the odd game when 2 close games together like they did last time when Pope played v KOSOVO, but doubt he will be droped at all

Someone needs to help with his spacial awareness, beaten by the shot that hit the post early on. On corners he is at times all over the place. Young enough to adjust his game if his ego will allow.

I would decide against signing a 37 year old relegated keeper as back up myself.

His opinion of himself is far too high. The best keepers are humble. This kid ain't right in the head.
