2019/20 Jordan Pickford

Any English keeper gets overhyped. Courtois openly mocked him for being a flappy midget at the world cup. England's no. 1 means very little. His main competitors are / were Butland and the Burnley keeper. He's not top class and I can't imagine any of the European giants will be forming an orderly queue soon. He is, however, better than our other recent options (Joel). But ultimately maybe not as good as Howard, who was much maligned too. Maybe on a par, open to opinion.

Frankly, he's right for where we are. Not that bad, not that good. Meh.
He's exactly like Howard, good reaction shot stopper, poor decision maker and creates uncertainty in his six yard box.

Right because they had all of the other pieces. Dropping Bravo was the last piece. If we want upgrading on Pickford to mean we win the title we should sign Aguero Sterling De Bruyne David Silva and Bernardo first.

But seriously if we replaced Pickford with De Gea or Alisson or peak Southall we'd go from 8th to maybe 7th or 6th. We have limited resources. We can't go spending 50m on a position that is filled decently right now.

I agree, other positions have to take priority, however if a Nigel Martyn came on the market I'd like to see Brands going for him so there's a decent, experienced guy in reserve. If that did happen and Pickford got an injury, it would be interesting to see if history repeated itself. Regardless, the club would have good backup if someone then came in for Pickford. I wouldn't blame the club for cashing in if they did.

It's not filled decently though is it mate. He's not even average. " but he's England's no1, he's a good shot stopper, blah, blah, blah". He can't even get the basics right. We're not gonna win the league by replacing him. We probably might not get into the top 6 but it will be a step in the right direction.

We need to replace him and have someone with a bit of experience in goal. It's the only position where I think experience and maturity is more valuable than natural ability.

He's got the experience Tim, that isn't his issue as he sbeen a 1st team keeper for about 5 seasons now.

His issue is he has absolute brain fart moments and isn't commanding his 6 yard box. These are things that should have been fixed by the Everton coaches but haven't (commanding of his area) so mistakes unfortunately look like will be part of his make up and we either accept that and understand some matches he'll make great shot saving contributions, and other matches we are going to be saying "he should have done better".

Last 3 games unfortunately have all included "he should have done better" moments

He doesn't show the maturity I'm looking for. He's played a lot but repeatedly makes the same errors. He's nowhere near as good as he thinks he is, and lots of our supporters think he is.

We need someone far steadier who is rock solid on the basics. Flashy wonder saves are not much use when we see so many gaffes.

Maybe but they had a decent keeper before that as well. The first thing Pep did was to realise that Joe Hart was a disaster waiting to happen and got shut even though all the so called experts where saying he was the best keeper in England blah blah blah. Pickford's had enough chances and dropped enough clangers.
Claudio Bravo a decent keeper for city?

Really?

I had such high expectations when Pickford came here, but unfortunately he's nothing special.

If someone wanted to pay a lot of money for him, I reckon he could very easily be replaced at a fraction of the cost.

This forum would blow up if Pickford made the same amount of mistakes as De Gea, the united fans I know despise him.

The people who criticise Pickford generally don't have an appreciation of what other 'keepers do as they don't watch them 90 minutes every week.

Pickford is a good 'keeper. Very good in fact. The truth is he's still a very young 'keeper; they peak generally in their 30s. He's an established England international - even against City when he made mistakes he still made several good saves too.

I ask the people who want rid of him, who genuinely is better than him who is realistic in terms of bringing in? I know this is hypocrisy in a way as I laugh at that argument with managers, but in this case there's genuinely very few goalkeepers who don't also make mistakes that are better than Pickford overall.

Should he be dropped at the moment? Not for me no - but should he be criticised? Absolutely. He hasn't been good enough lately, but it's form rather than overall ability that's the problem.

keepers at United, Spurs & LIverpool have made bigger mistakes this season, if you think he's not even average in this league then you've got unrealistic expectations.
