All football is percentages. I get the argument but for me 95+ times out of 100 the player receiving the ball in that position from that punch cannot score. How many times do we see a lob like that come off? I recall James missing an easier one for us last week and he is the consumate practitioner of that type of skill.

Arguably 7 or 8 times out of 10 the punch does go further so actually the odds of a goal ensuing increase exponentially to something like one in 1,000 if my memory of percentages from A Level maths is right. Maybe his technique can be criticised, but not the decision.

But surely if his technique is in question then that should change his decision making? Why try do something you’re not good at.

I'm not sure on the whole pickford thing. He makes the easy things look difficult and the difficult things look easy. That save from James tonight was world class. He throws the odd clanger in at times, but there have definitely been some games this season where he's saved us points.

I always come away thinking his worldy saves balance out his clangers, so for the moment, I'm happy enough with him.

But he tried that specific thing once in a moment of danger and it led to the danger being snuffed out. Not sure how much more there is to it, it would have taken a moment of supreme skill for a goal to ensue, whereas arguably had he not done it all it would have taken for a goal was a routine head down by Giroud and a slot from 10 yards or so from whoever picked up the knock-down. Not a supreme piece of skill.

We could go back and forth all night on this as it's arguing about something that didn't happen (I.e. a goal being conceded) but I am happy with that passage of play from him and would happily see it again. I absolutely see why others may not be though.

I just prefer my defenders to defend balls crossed at the edge of my box not a notoriously short, non-dominating & reckless goalkeeper.

Let me see if I’ve got this right. You go to all the trouble of shouting at your defenders to line up right at a free kick, have them cover a particular area of the goal, set yourself in position to cover the exposed area, then step away to your right to the area covered by the wall leaving the area you’re supposed to cover totally exposed. He’s a clown.

his shouting is all for the cameras mate imo. He has to be centre of attention . If things are quiet and he’s not seeing the ball etc most keepers would be happy never to touch the ball I’m a match ... not him ... he starts coming to the edge of the area and I’m sure if he still wasn’t involved he’s be making tackles on the half way line... the fact he kept a clean sheet was down to them not hitting the target with that free kick and the chip over the top onto the net. In another day... like most games this season ... we would have conceded two amd lost the match

Didnt say you was,its just a very general theme, that even with a win people still want to moan, we have just beat one of the best teams at the minute in the league yet some are still moaning about him,
To be fair no keeper is ever good enough for Everton-even if we ended up with the worlds best no doubt some would moan

I don’t think anyone ever moaned about nev or martyn ... The other thing is ... if people main when we lose it’s knee jerk, bedwetters etx and when people moan after a fortunate win... they’re told to shut up and enjoy the win...

He’s playing really quite well recently. I do hope this time he actually has got his head straight and it isn’t just another false dawn
He has and he hasn't. He's actually made some saves the last few games. Leeds he was on the whole good. Burnley he made a big one on Wood. Today he had a couple decent (personally think calling the save at his near post brilliant is overselling it) ones. So that is better because he wasn't saving anything for awhile.

But he hasn't because he's still getting beaten from way out entirely too much and he's still doing things like almost getting chipped following a questionable punch or stepping the wrong way on a free kick (this one is a long time habit).

The problem is he was so bad early on that his recent improvement is giving the idea that he is good now and he isn't, he's just less bad.

I think he gets perhaps judged overly harshly because he comes across as a bit of a bell, but actually he's been very good recently and not that bad this season. He's made some vital saves this season, many more than the points he's lost us through daft mistakes.

Credit where it's due, he's been good for about 4 games in a row now. Distribution still leaves a lot to be desired for me but has made good saves and was more commanding today.
