2020/21 Jordan Pickford

I disagree, well kind of, there may be a weak mentality there too but to be honest his goalkeeping basics are shocking. Weak hands, leading with the wrong hand, knowing when to come and when to stay back and the big one for me, guessing where a ball is going rather than reacting to where it's going. Loads of goalies do that.

Id disagree with that mate, I think he has the goal keeping ability, always did, picked him out at a Sunderland when he was sent out on loan. It’s his ability to remain composed, make decisions and hold tension and anxiety are areas I think he needs support, I think it’s psychological.

Before the World Cup, I think he was close to our best player.

The national piss taking is getting to a level now he will find it hard to recover. Heard last night on radio a host asking callers if you had a gun pointed at you who would you choose kepa or pickford. With people actualy saying kepa.
All very humorous. But got joe hart going through him like a stick of blackpool rock.
Big call carlo. Not for next season. Possibly the next week or so.

He doesn't need competition.

We (as in the club) however do at the very least.

Same thing. Maybe having a decent understudy keeping him on his toes will make him realise trying to pull off the spectacular to make it look good as opposed to just doing the basics won’t get him much playing time.

He’s been utterly useless since Kelly was the goalkeeping coach. Maybe he needs binning too

He was his goalkeeper coach at Preston so all he goes on about is Pickford being one of the most strong minded keepers, when he makes a mistake he bounces right back up.

Basicslly there's no consequence to your actions if your told "nevermind, try not to do it next time".

I'd say Pickford is now on borrowed time, Carlo wasn't happy with him end of last season and he sure as hell won't be happy with yesterday. He'll want to know why the GK set up simply isn't working how it should.

He'll probably keep his place until we drop points due to his incompetence. Tough to drop a keeper when he's been part of 3 of the last 4 wins and Carlo won't want to unsettle what will currently be a positive dressing room.

I'd be very surprised if we get a gk in now, I can't see a loan signing as they won't see themselves as guaranteed first choice.. Tricky

He obviously has some ability, all professional goalkeepers will. You see average keepers make tremendous saves etc quite often. The basics are always the ones that separate the good from the great for me.

Take the best goalkeeper to ever play the game for example in Southall, tremendous, ridiculous saves all over the place, however he was also fundamentally sound, always positioned himself correctly, and pretty much never made mistakes.

Obviously comparing him to the best ever is harsh but the likes of Seaman were classed as top quality because they limited their mistakes and did the basics flawlessly (until his later years anyway.)

Good points mate. That’s were I’m coming from on Pickford. Southall, Seaman, two players who could pull out quality from not being in the game at all. Jordan for me, can’t stay composed, constantly wants to impact the game, this leads to anxiety and frenzy, that empower poor decision making. It all started after the World Cup for me he can’t handle that profile. Many of his mistakes are individual and down to decision making.

He needs a sports psychologist for me. We know he has the ability, his first year before the World Cup, he was class. He came back a different player and perhaps ego.

I don't think it is the same thing as I can't see competition improving Pickford at all. He has loads of competition for his England place for example, that should be enough for him to not play like crap if he is that way inclined.

Competition helps us of course because you would hope that a new keeper would be better than him.

He needs sending to a sports psychologist, his problem is mental and not ability.

Wrost thing that ever happened to him was to be a star at the World Cup.
My brother in law is a Sunderland fan, he said before we signed him that he was a match of the day keeper - makes some great saves but is technically lacking. It’s been clear from day one that that’s the case to be honest. He has good reflexes and a natural ability/desire to repel the ball, but his positioning, command of his area and technique have always been poor.

That fair enough mate, I always rated him and banged the drum to sign him before he came. I saw very little in his first year to convince me otherwise. But he’s been pony since the World Cup. Personally think he doesn’t have the maturity or psychological resources to handle the profile.
