When the club was well run financially and competing we got what we wanted for Stones and Lukaku but when it's a mess on/off the field our position is weakened, which is why we missed £30m+ on Richarlson. Will be same with Pickford.
I am not sure why Man Utd would pay circa 50m for Pickford now, it doesn't make sense to me. Utd are in the process of being sold so why would the owners sanction a 50m purchase of a player that they don't desperately need? Regardless of whether you think Pickford is better than DeGea or not, DeGea is a good keeper and is perfectly adequate for United for the coming season. Upgrading their GK is a real luxury purchase that is not needed and is not the type of thing a club should be doing while they expect to have new owners soon. On top of that, Utd are in dire need of a striker and need to get one and can't let the sale of the club delay this. If a striker costs them 60m+, are they really going to spend 50m on top of that now? I doubt it. Maybe later in the summer if new owners are confirmed they may want a new GK but I can't see it happening now

But De Gea is out of contract and they are offering him reduced terms as his current wage is enormous. If he can get the Saudis to match his current wage he’ll no doubt leave so they do most likely need to bring in a GK this summer.
Well, that would certainly change the urgency of getting a new keeper. I thought Utd had an option to extend that by a year though.

Makes a lot of sense that, I think this United interest is just paper talk although they could most probably get your World Cup winning ‘keeper for a lot less than they would have to pay for Pickford and I think your goalie is looking to get away from Villa Park.
This would be as stupid as selling Richarlison imo.

Not sure if there’s an option but if there is it would have to be at the current 375k a week and given the numerous errors he was making last season you can see why they wouldn’t.
Pickford would take half of DDGs wage and was more consistent last season, plus is much better with the ball at his feet which matters more and more. Factoring in about 10m a years saving in wages I could see why they’d pay 50m for Pickford and let DDG walk.
But they would only need to extend DeGea by 1 year and can look for a new GK next summer, or even extend and look for a new GK in Aug if they have new owners. I just don't see any real strategic transfers happening at O/T until the sale has gone through. I think the links to Watkins show that too. Watkins is not a 20 goal a season striker, he is a good player but not the main striker for a top 4 team and he would only be a stopgap / backup striker if the rumours are true that Uts want to buy him.
I wouldn't entertain anything less than 70m.

But De Gea earns almost 20m a year. That’s too much just to spend just to kick the can down the road a bit. It doesn’t need to be JP but spending 50m on any younger, better performing and lower earning keeper makes more sense. It’s a situation they need to sort no matter what happens with the sale so there’s no reason they should wait for that.

Yeah, but the sale will determine their transfer budget and if it is the Qataris then the budget could be very big and they may be able to buy better quality players in every position.
