Issue with going long for England is that Kane has spent the last decade backing into defenders and not jumping at all, to try and look like he is being held. It’s his equivalent of that nonsense we used to see where strikers would jump early to make it look like they had been pushed back down. Difference being it’s a miracle Kane hasn’t ended somones career (or worse) by letting them jump awkwardly over his shoulders and land on their own head/neck. No interest in flicking it on, all about winning a free kick. Great to his feet and chest, but above his head from a long clearance, no chance. Not interested.
Pickford will spend his whole England career with the same criticisms. We concede a goal, “could he have done better?” as it rifled into the corner. We keep clean sheets, “the defence did a fantastic job restricting chances”. Does everything asked of him. Gives it a defender, gets it back after 3 pointless passes. Probably his fault he was passed the ball after we took a short corner.
The great thing is he really doesn’t seem to care one bit what they write about him. Its taken until this tournament for his excellent stats to even be mentioned. At the end of his England career it will become obvious that it will be very difficult for anyone to better them.
If he saves a couple of pens in the final, Saka will win BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
