2023/24 Jordan Pickford

Can't think of a keeper who does catch the ball when saving shots in the modern game. The football used these is very light, difficult to catch at speed and prone to swerving more than older balls according to Neville Southall and he says it's safer to palm it away than try to catch it.
Palm it away from the master - not back to the edge of the box .....

It was a bit of a "Bipolar" performance by Jordan Pickford yesterday. During the first half, he made a couple of decent saves to keep us ahead and in with a chance of winning. In the second half, he handed Man City the game by not dealing with the corner that led to the pen, and later by rocketing a panicked pass that bounced off Jarrad Branthwaite(?) leading to their third.

He's not as bad as he used to be but I have noticed Pickford getting 'excitable' again during games and shouting at his players etc. for no apparent reason. There's no reason for concern though, IMHO, as the lad is a top keeper who will help us far, far, more than he will hinder us.

Lost his head towards the end, this is what caused his howler for the third goal, all keepers make howlers, even Neville Southall and Gordon West made howlers. It's just an occupational hazard for a keeper, the nature of their position makes any mistakes they make potentially serious.
Noticed this about five minutes before their first goal he was charging around shouting then was shoved back into the sticks by Tarks then started shouting at Tarks.
After the game it briefly showed Tarks clearly giving him a talking to as well.

One of those games where he’s doing it less and less frequently but it only takes one game for a keeper to lose their heads and the game is lost

His habit of saving a good shot but punching or palming the ball back towards the middle of our goal has to stop too - a great shot stopper, but little thought inconsistent saves us in some games - blows the game in others ,,,,
Plenty of GKs punch in the modern age though. And given the conditions at Goodison the other day I don't blame him for punching it.

Ederson did a similar punch in the first half and City were just fortunate it fell to one of their lads and not ours. It happens.

Ideally he would catch it, but as a shorter goalkeeper I understand why he prefers to punch.

The saves he makes arent hard saves, but he never pulls out a save were you think hows he saved that.
Personally think he should do better with the 1st goal but wouldnt class it as an error.
