2024/25 Jordan Pickford

IMO, the two best keepers in the Prem are Pickford and Martinez of Villa. Interesting that BOTH are disliked by most pundits and journos. When they make great saves and/or penalty saves, even then they usually only get begrudging praise. I think it is because they are both seen as "loons" and neither play for the "big" clubs. Their faces don't fit. Thoughts?

I think Martinez gets loads of credit from commentators and pundits.

They seem to class Pickford as some erratic joke figure, as if someone better is about to come along and take his throne.

He's seen off about 6 England keepers who have tried to take his place + no other keeper has come in and ever looked like challenging him at Everton.

I think he's still got a couple of years left on his deal and is on a decent wage so personally I'd wait until the summer. We're going to have to be very careful when it comes to how much we are offering players.

Clubs who finish 13th-17th don't pay players 100k+ a week (though that is what weve been guilty of). He's never agitated for a move away so I think it's sensible to sit down in the summer and see what thr plans are then.

If you have Amazon prime watch back the match and the commentary about him, it’s like they are praising a a child for feeding himself, it’s a borderline slur on him using phrasing that suggesting he had mental health issues.

I don’t always buy into the “Everton” victimology playbook, but if you watch and listen to the commentary you’ll hear the condescending comments and tone about his capabilities as a goalie.

Part of the reason I never ever watch or listen to footy on telly.

Martinez gets alot of credit basically because of his International status. He made 2 big errors for Villa in a few days a few weeks ago just for one, and hardly a word has been mentioned about it. If its Pickford people use it in their heads forever,or just play on the "He's erratic stuff" that they carried on with yesterday when he is simply doing a normal thing. As i said last week once one person uses it, they all carry on like sheep, no matter the show  Dont see anyone carrying on with the way Martinez acted with Argentina etc

I watched it mate, I thought it was terrible commentary and like you said, I felt they were discussing some 14 year old kid who had issues and was a bit "jumpy" which they said about 7 times.

It wasn't funny at all.

Yep, it's a pre scripted narrative they have of Pickford.

Gotta consider how much they will rave about any challenger to his England throne. Someone like Ramsdale or Henderson establishes themselves as a no. 1 somewhere and suddenly they're the second coming of Yashin.

Nick Pope as well. Listening to the comments about him, he was the child of Schmeichel, Southall, Zoff and Banks.

How many has he seen off now, these 3 obviously, any others?

It’s just standard RS media hating any player that doesn’t play for them.

Ederson and Allison were both extremely similar for years. Ederson better with his feet, Allison better at one on ones. Yet one was pumped as the best keeper in the world and up there with the best ever in the prem and the other wasn’t mentioned despite often starting ahead of Allison for Brazil.

Raya has been fantastic for Arsenal but when he makes an error it’s seized on. When Allison is kicking it into his own net it’s just glossed over. However when Ramsdale played for Arsenal none of those errors were mentioned because the media wanted Pickford out the England team. It’s just whatever suits their agenda at the time.

Pickford is an extremely good keeper. He makes far less mistakes than a lot of other keepers who make them much more regularly than people realise. We’ll have a tough time replacing him when he goes.

Sam Johnston, Jack Butland and James Trafford are other keepers who spring to mind that have been in the squad in recent years but none of them were really spoke of as challenging for the number 1 spot. I think when Pickford first made the team he beat off competition from Joe Hart and Fraser Forster.

That's right. Forgot about them. Made his England debut in 2017 so basically he's had to see off one other keeper every year.

Pickford probably won't get the credit til he moves or retires.

It's surprising how little you hear commentators or pundits mention the Euro Final where he saved two penalties in the shootout. If there wasn't the regular undermining and riduculing of him by pundits I'm sure we'd often hear about his penalty heroics that were unfortunately in vain. Must annoy him but he clearly loves playing for his country, as he also does for us.

They can describe him all they want he's had everything from erratic, unorthodox, limited , short armed and now jumping ( whatever that means ) thrown at him.

As with challengers to his England position he's seen them all off ...and still laughing.

Fwiw the majority of the bile really started after the VanDiyk incident. They just won't let that go and use any opportunity to have a dig.

Noticed how evident that was a few weeks ago on motd. Martinez did make a good save against Forest but his mistake also cost them the game. They sort of brushed that away and concentrated on the save.
Pickfords performance the same day against Arsenal was glorious. He never got the same plaudits.
